Mushroom Honey
    #2686514 - 05/16/04 02:56 PM (13 years, 9 days ago)

I have a jar of shroom honey I started on 4-9-04.It is a 12 ounce jar of clover honey that I poured in a qt jar and added about 18 grams of dried mushroom powder and aborts, along with a few large caps I tossed in.Anyway for about the first 3 weeks it kept its amber color, although all the mushroom pieces kept seperating to the top.,annd I had to keep stiring it up every few days. Now it has taken on a tannish/grey color and is a little different consistancy than before. It doent smell bad and I dont see anything that I would consider as contams or bacteria or anything.I tasted a little and it tasted just like normal honey. It is kept in the fridge wrapped in foil.
Is this color change normal?Ive heard that it really only turns blue if you use fresh mushrooms, and I didnt so I didnt expect it to be "blue"honey, but i dont know what to make of this tannish/grey color. This is my first try at this.
Anyone know?

This is about as close to the actual color of the honey as I could find:

How could spores trn it that color, and it just turned this color in the last week after about a month of looking like normal honey.

i did an extraction of shrooms with everclear this is what it looked like after evaporation-

this is more concentrated than honey would be so it's darker, shroom tea turns black, grey or browinish depending on how long you cook/soak it and if you used fully matures or semi-sterile (not much spores) ect, spore can turn syringes black if you use a lot, probably just took a while to color it because of the viscosity of honey, i bet everything is okay i would eat/swallow.drink it if i was you :stoned:

ok cool.I plan on letting them go for another 2 months at least(3 total) before trying it,the color just made me a little nervous. The little mushroom pieces and the aborts I can see dont look nasty at all,so your probably right. They were cracker dry and its been in the fridge so its probably unlikely that it would go bad anyway. thanx man

BTW did you extraction work well?

IT is really not a good thing to store shrooms in honey. mj

Why is that?Everything I've read says the opposite, that as long as they are cracker dry before doing it,i have read they can stay preserved in honey for more than a year without any problems. Please explain your statement MJ.

Thats exactly what mine looks like ,a creamy tannish color.I have it in the fridge partly because it is getting hot out now,and sometimes it gets pretty warm in our house.,when we are at work the air conditioners are off.

Here are jonathan Ott's personal comments about the storing of shrooms in Honey and/or freezing from his book Pharmacotheon.

Page 291:

and
Page 306-307:

I agree with his interpretation of that. The Aztecs did not preserve shrooms in honey. They dried them in gords for later use.

Honey shrooms bought by Ott from native peoples had become so rotted and bug infested. And you have to eat a lot of the mushrooms of the honey and much hiney usually to get the high. Rememebr it takes at least an 8th of an ounce dried or more for a 3-5 level trip. You can only get so many doses in a friggin jar of homey. You could put an ounce of dried cubes in a jar and fill it with honey. You would still have a total of 5 to ten doses in that one pound jar. Measuring the honey is hard at that rate.

Yes people do store them in honey but it is not good for the shrooms. for other things maybe but not shrooms. And yes many still do it and recipes are posted on the internet.

I personally do not recommend it.

mj
