First time grower - contam? genuine GT?

Evening all. First time grower/noob here - using the VERY simple method: GT spore solution > grain bag > coco coir/verm/gypsum > unmodded plastic tub > lid 1 inch open & daily misting > started pinning 3 days ago
My first three attempts fell foul to trich, but this one has so far survived the green & I’m delighted that it’s even started to fruit - even though they are short, fat & rather unattractive (a bit like me).
My questions are, 1) does the substrate look contaminated to any of your trained eyes? There are clumps of bright white specs but I’m not sure if I’m just paranoid after the trichoderma episodes. 2) is the tallest one definitely a GT & should I just pick it as it’s prematurely opened/flattened (am reading conflicting reports on this)?
Many thanks - pics below...

I would personally assume something is in there that isn’t healthy myc. Fruits like that would be caused by lack of water content in the sub or a contam disturbing the mycelium and causing the pins to open ASAP to get their spores into the environment for fear of dying.
The bright white specks don’t seem to be the problem imo. I think you had bacterial spawn and the sub never fully colonized. Also the huge amount of mutants could be another pointer towards a contam or bacterial spawn.

i could be wrong but the white spots just look like knots/primordia to me. pick the mushrooms that opened their caps, it’s totally fine to just harvest those that are ready. from what i’ve read it’s usually caused by either too much or too little moisture in the sub. it looks decently colonized on the top but it could also be bacteria, bacteria can be pretty sneaky. was your substrate more on the wet or dry side when you spawned?

I’d be willing to bet things were on the dry side. Mushrooms don’t look like this when there’s enough moisture content.
It’s either moisture content or a contamination. That’s my two cents 😀

Thank you for your replies - appreciated.
Probably worth me mentioning that the first box produced similar short stumps within a couple of days before the trich got in. So I just binned it.
I also suspect now that my spawn to substrate ratio was a bit under which would affect colonisation I guess.
The substrate this time round was a bit drier. I let it set in pre-boiled water for 24 hours and then let it drain in a pillow for another 24. Did the squeeze test and it seemed good.

Have you ever pasteurized CVG in quart jars? Or followed that specific tek?
The moisture content shouldn’t take that long to achieve. Put your coir brick with 2 quarts maybe a bit more in a bucket and let it soak for an hour in 4qts of water, maybe less, maybe more water, then once it’s expanded you mix in some gypsum like a handful.
Load this into quart jars just don’t pack it down too much. I find that I can get about 9 quart jars out of one 650gram coir brick.
And heat the jars in water to 145f and turn the stove off. Temp should stay around that temp for an hour to be properly pasteurized. Then just let it cool and use when you need it. Coir is very contam resistant. Properly pasteurized sub is easier for mycelium to consume and colonize.

No not even looked into that method, but I’m all ears/eyes! Did you mean 2 quarts of verm to go with it? And is this to be done with the lids off so excess liquid escapes? Excuse my blatant beginners questions - all info appreciated though.
Have just given the tub a darn good squirting at the sides, and I’ll do it again before I go to bed. Nothing to lose at this stage.
Thanks again guys.

You can do it this way, and yes I meant verm.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20469910
Or this way
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17325780#17325780
I use the second method which works fine.
I’m not saying this will fix your problems because even poorly hydrated substrate should colonize a bit better than this appears to have, that’s just my opinion sorry if I’m wrong.

Thanks EntheoGod - I gave them a read earlier today, and will do so a second time but taking notes also!
Well I consumed 7.6g of fresh mutants and I’ve had the best Thursday evening for a while... pleasantly surprised.
Just a thought - to prove if the spore solution could be the issue or not, could I just let them fruit straight from the grain bag once fully colonised? I’ve two grain bags to use...
