Cleaning Invitro Pins From BRF Cakes Between Flushes
    #26863572 - 08/04/20 10:34 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

So I finished off the rest of my brown rice I had laying around since I'm going to switch to bulk from now on.

My question is, I have never had big pins invitro before on cakes. I had to run out for a few days and came back to fully colonized jars with pretty big pins in it, and they were dying to fruit.

They made it through the dunk and roll, and grew to full maturity. They actually look great. I think if I ever did cakes again, I'd probably wait for a few pins past the week consolidation. They're huge and aggressive. Did seem to affect my first full pinset though. But hard to tell with a MS grow.

Anyway, I'll be dunking them in the next couple days and I'm not sure what to do with the old pins. The fruit, I cut with an xacto knife as close to the base as I could. But since they grew invitro, a large portion of the stem is still mashed up against the side of the cake. I didn't want to remove it during harvest for fear it would damage a large portion of the cake and the surrounding pins.

Should I leave this part of the stem? Cut it off carefully? Let it sit as it is during the second dunk?

And another related question. After the invitro pins mature and are harvested, is that the first flush? Or will I get actually a real first flush? I've never had this happen, so I'm not sure if this is it or not. Its only been 5 days since birthing. I do see some pins on most of the cakes, but nothing amazing or near what I've had in the past. Waiting it out though. Nature will provide what it will provide  Thanks all!

Just shave off the mushroom close to the cake without getting into the vermiculite. Something like a very sharp fillet knife will make it easier. And yeah, all those big chunkers would be considered the first flush.

Some chunkers dude! They look great, awesome job.

Personally I would just remove any pins before your dunk, but I don’t think it’ll make a huge difference either way. Also personally, I would twist that giant stem to get the whole thing off there so it would be edible lol. But as someone else said, you could leave it and just cut as close to the cake as possible.

Thanks for the reply guys, and thanks for the kind words GayFish!
I gave 'em lots of love

These came out great I think from leaving them (accidentally) to pin in vitro pretty large before birthing. And after birth, I used the wax paper tek with little tents of wax paper until the mushies pushed it off. Seemed to do wonders!

That was my question, was should I remove the part of the stem that's literally glued to the cake. That would be edible too yes, and I'm thinking I should remove that so it doesn't contaminate. I will do that, just wanted to see what you all thought of it prior.

Here's a picture of that big mondo guy. He came out to 2.25 grams dry. I'm happy with these cakes for a first flush even. Looking at 17.71 grams dry so far out of 7 cakes. One has yet to fruit and the other are still going. Can't wait to see what a good dunk makes out of the subsequent flushes. And I'd like to compare the effects of the medicine with standard PE which has always been amazing.

These are PE #6 "strain" MS grown with standard BRF PF Tek in a SGFC. First try with wax paper. I have to say this "strain" was slow to grow, and a late fruiter, but once the pins set, they grow crazy fast.

I like how PE #6 is crossed with Texans, which have a bigger canopy, and making prints have been so much easier than standard PE because they have the look of Texans and the caps actually open up.

Definitely a keeper in my book. Super thick guys.
I have 8 jars of popcorn going with some MS from the original purchase and 10 going with a print I made off that fat boy pictured here. (Didn't have agar ready in time to clone :frown:
Again, slow to colonize, but the popcorn has made a huge difference in speed compared to BRF.

These popcorn jars will be my first bulk grow with shoe boxes and coir/verm. I know they'll do well.

I do have to say, I have had two mutants so far, both with really curly DOUBLE stems going into one cap. Though this maybe from them being pinned in vitro.

Can they compress in a jar so much they grow into one cap from two stems? Really cool looking
