Next step?
    #26863433 - 08/04/20 08:31 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

So, I set up tubs yesterday and ended up with a little more cake than what would go in my mini mono; put three half-pint cakes in a SGFC and made a mini mono out of 3qt of shredded brf cake. From what I've read on here the best way to improve my yields at this point (aside from gaining experience and perfecting my techniques through practice) is to work on genetics. Cloning, spores from clone, more cloning, etc. My question is this thought; I'm not really ready to start working with agar yet. It's my goal, but I just can tell I need a little more brf cake work before I make that step. Plus that will involve investing in more materials and I'm a little cash-strapped atm.

So how do I proceed? Can you take tissue from a shroom and clone it into brf jars? I've seen a tek for putting the tissue from stems into a ziplock bag for a couple of days until fresh, new myc starts to spread from it, and that seemed like it might work for me; but I don't know.

If not cloning, should I just pick the best fruit from my first flushes and take spore prints to create new syringes?

Handling live mycelium isn`t as easy as it sounds without agar.
A clone into brf won`t work, you would have to open the jars for this,
and harm your dry verm barrier.
I strongly advice to learn agar, by the time you have all the things you need for.
In the meantime, you could do some spore prints.

You may read through some links in my signature, they may help you.
Have patience my friend, that`s the hardest part of the hobby
Feel free to ask everything you want.

Thanks for the response. I kinda felt like that was probably what I'd need to do; It's not that I'm impatient, per se, but more that I've spent a lot of time reading on here while already practicing patience to get from ordering spores to birthing cakes and mixing substrate. And the general consensus seems to be that until I can do the cloning to isolate the best genes, the amount that I can improve has a bit of a cap on it. I'll just do a spore print from the best of my first fruits and keep chugging like this until I can get the stuff for agar. I could use the practice on my sterile technique from what I've read.

Also, one of my syringes was PE, and I've read all about how hard it can be to get spores from those so I am a little afraid that without the ability to clone I might not have a second generation of them at all. But we'll just have to see.

For a spore print, you just look for a big cap to have more spores.
You just reset genetics with a spore print.

Remember you have to do a real casing with PE.

Right, I HAD almost forgotten that, well, I'm still probably about 3 weeks away from tubbing those though, so I have time to practice.
