So a few weeks ago I bought a kit from a Colorado based company. It came with 51 quart grow chamber, mask, gloves, alcohol, sterilized grain x2 (1 pound packages)and 5 Lb substrate. Instructions said to knock up the bag of grains, then once colonized break them up and mix with subs and put inside chamber lined with plastic. Followed the directions and it worked perfectly. I have some photos of the first flush. Colorado I guess started a mycology supply company once they decriminalized psilocybin. Good for them, the kits seem to work well.

awesome, glad that worked for you!
I ordered a kit when I got started because I was eager to start quick and thought it would speed things up. To grow well there is a lot of learning involved. By the time I learned enough I could just make tubs myself without a kit. Now I have 4 tubs, including the 1 kit tub. I probably could have gotten the stuff cheaper if I bought it myself and customized it more to my liking if I got items individually. I also would have saved some money.
I am not against kits at all, people can spend their money however they like. Perhaps it is good for some people who just want to grow quick and easy and don't mind if it costs a little more. Personally, I have to know WHY things happen so by the time I learned everything I needed to know to get started I no longer needed a kit really.
A lot of the kits come with a lot of B.S. that is unneeded, or is just low quality. The one you got sounds simple at least so people can go out and buy their own timer, lights, etc as needed that fits their own needs.
In general I am not really a big advocate of kits after my experiences but if I was gonna suggest getting one, I think someone getting a minimalist one like the one you describe is the way to go. That way people can buy their own items to add onto it and get quality ones or get cheaper ones. Some of the kits try to overwhelm by including sooo many items that it convinces a newb they NEED the kit because it is so much stuff. The kit you describe at least sounds more straightforward and less gimmicky! Contaminated substrates is a common newb issue so I can see value in buying premade substrates to get started so that someone can enjoy success without frustration. Pasteurizing is easy enough but sterilizing can get messed up by people and most new growers don't own a pressure cooker.
I am glad you are having luck! A kit isn't necessary by any means, but if a newb decided they were going to start by kit definitely think the type you describe is better than one with too much unneeded stuff, assuming the price is right.
I hope we see more locales decrim and we see more mycology businesses flourish in the future! Imagine if one day mycology is as plentiful and socially accepted as cannabis growing/using

Shroom kits are like paying prime rib prices for dollar menu mcdonalds. Not to knock cubes but the cost to grow on your own is pennies on the oz. I hope that kit was less than a pizza otherwise I'd be pissed.

I dont care if the kit sucked your dick while it drove you to work. Shame on you. SHAME!

LOL, that sums it up better than I ever could. I would hope that someone using a kit gets inspired to learn from it and then take the training wheels off and make their own tubs. Wasting a few bucks one time isn't the worst thing that can happen, but I know someone in an online chat group I am in that literally orders every jar they use going on more than a year. Luckily we bullied him for 6 weeks straight and he bought a pressure cooker finally lol. I prefer to be supportive over being a dick but sometimes tough love is necessary, especially if I can figure out how to make my own supplies after 2 months and the guy is still using kits and premade jars.
I think people are afraid of messing things up and getting contams, I know I was, but making mistakes is one of the best ways to learn, and the satisfaction of doing it yourself is much greater.
