I have my first session tomorrow for a tattoo that I made an appointment a month ago for. Its a half sleeve and is running me close to $1000 she was supposed to draw it up a few weeks ago but I've never seen it yet is this normal for a professional studio? I've only gotten small tattoos in non professional settings before so I don't really know it just seems weird to me.

Yes. Everything about that seems normal to me.
Enjoy!

Yes. It's normal in my experience.
You can send in reference material, but won't see a final design until it actually goes on.
$1k is pretty good. I did a half sleeve geometric design that was 3 times that.

The only thing abou the tattoo industry is that it's something about needles and drawing.

The one on my leg was about $1200 total and 8-9 hours. Im tall so it goes from my waist to almost my knee. Im looking to expand that and probly spend the same amount.
I just think a pro tattoo artist is the only way to go. Backyard tattoos or by friends just look too amateur to me for being permanent. Its just a much more comfortable environment as well by a trusted artist. Good luck man!

Make sure you see their other art to make sure they're a good artist before you let them draw on you.

Exactly. It takes research to find what style you really want. There are no 2 artists the same.
Pics when done!

It ended up only being 375 because we choose to make the design a bit smaller and idk

Nice work OP. Looks like a good size and placement, you had a solid artist that respects you. A lot of people would run your 1k out just to make it rather than tailor your art to the canvas.
Always nice and less anxious after you have done work with an artist also.

@Psyche delics
Nice tat you have my man. No doubt I would give it a 9-9.5/10. Its not easy for one to do a tat with just shades of black, and obviously the artist has experience for sure. I know some people that have tattoos with that blend in them and it looks too smudgy for my liking. I have 3 tattoos in total, but I honestly need more. My tattoos are.. uneven.. to say the least!
