Grain jar colonization looking good?
    #26862322 - 08/04/20 09:50 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

I’ve had three grain jars and they seem to be almost fully colonized I’m pretty sure what are your thoughts on the jars? They have mycelium throughout the whole jars with nothing not colonized.

Yea it’s where the grains aren’t there and the camera makes it look darker.

Looks fine to me. Smell is always a really good tell. How many shakes have you done?

👍

Relying on smell can be dangerous.
Perfect looking jars can smell perfect,
but may hide some shit inside.
Especially after shaking up, it always smells fungi.

Best way imo is to make the final shake before spawning,
and let them sit for two more days.
If myc doesn`t recover, you have a problem.

Chances of you having a contam that doesn’t stink is pretty slim but of course I’m not saying solely rely on smelling it.

Speed of recovery after a shake is a great tell. That will show you for sure what’s going on inside the jar. After a shake, contams will spread quickly or the healthy myc will. Either way you’ll develop an eye for clean grain jars after a while.

I’ve always found that if I have a jar fully colonized but I’m questioning it, I’ll do one last shake and see if the recovery starts pretty strongly within a couple days.

So if I shake them up one more good time it won’t hurt them?

You would shake up to spawn anyway

Shake em and see how quickly it recovers but I’d do it close to a time you’re ready to make your substrate just for convenience.
