keep getting green mold on second flush
    #26860506 - 08/03/20 10:37 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

At a loss here, every tub I've done gets one flush and they are good strong flushes. Everytime as I rehydrate for second flush boom green mold. I've tried tap water and distilled. This has happened to 5 tubs so far b+ and golden teachers.

Little bit of info on the grow. Wild bird seed grain from multispore syringes into Coco/verm in shoebox totes in grow tent, air intake has a hepa filter on it. Spawn is fast, fully colonized and ready to fruit in about 7 days. The room is between 70 and 75 degrees and humidity is 85-95%. In between flushes I add water, lid the totes, pull them out and Lysol and bleach the tent. After an hour or so wipe the edges of the lids with Clorox wipes, drain water, remove lids and put back into fruiting conditions. Within a day or 2 I have green mold forming and toss the tubs. I'll add pics of the flushes and the green mold.

Is there anything else I can do to stop this? Happy I'm getting one flush from each tub but really want to get more...

You're spawn is probably lightly bacterial. This happened to me too until I dealt with the bacterial aspect.

I know bacterial look somewhat close to healthy growth. Do these look like they have bacterial infections? The last 2 pics are my lastest jar hoping they don't have that going on as well if they are having that issue.

Unfortunately, yes. That "dense" look with brilliant white myc is definitely bacteria. Last pic looks ok so far but it's too early to know 100%. I think you're going to have this issue until you switch to inoculating with agar. Did you mean the room or the inside of the tubs is 85-95% RH?

I just ordered some agar making materials a few days ago hopefully that will help. Damn nature being a pain in the ass!

Thank you for the info, have some more research to do now.

Can you point out where and what you're talking about here, precisely? I didn't see anything that stood out as bacterial. TIA!

Sure!
It's all the pics except for last. Notice how the myc looks dense, spongy, and opaque. Clean myc is sillky, symmetrical, and slightly translucent like in the last photo. You should be able to see the outline of grains through the mycelium. Also notice how some of the smaller colonized sections have a visible border of more opaque white, that's also a response to bacteria.

@djdc: 85% RH for your room is much too high and is probably contributing to the mold issue. 40-65% is best ime but I've grown fine in 15% too just needed more misting. Too much moisture slows down myc while encouraging mold spores.
Also instead of dunking you can try sidewatering, I find in the summer if I mist freshly harvested stumps before they begin recovering trich will develop sometimes on the freshly cut surface. So I wait 24 hours after harvest to mist and sidewater with 500ml  immediately. It also saves the time of having to dump water out since most of it is absorbed in a day or two.

It looks to me like mold in a few spots in those jars. Right above the “B” in the first two and dead center of the second two pics. Some of the myc looks a little thick but pictures are always hard to read for me unless they’re drastic.

All spore syringes I’ve put to agar have been riddled with bacteria, and I’d bet a lot have at least a few mold spores of whatever kind in them here and there. The molds usually would show up a little quicker but even weak bacteria that lets you get a first flush will be doing enough damage to allow the trich spores that are always everywhere to germinate.

Clemency is right, on second glance there's definitely suspicious dark spots where he pointed them out. The one above the "B" looks like hidden trich to me. I've never had a syringe be perfectly clean, even from the oldest and most trusted vendors.

Hidden mold + bacteria + excess humidity = Tubs not recovering from harvest and mold overtaking it.

Lower your RH to ~50% and start doing agar and your next runs will be better.

Do you shake your jars? because they look too full to be shaken properly. Shaking them up around 30-50% will allow them to colonize faster but it’s also a good test of cleanliness. Even bacteria you can’t really see will cause slower or sometimes no recovery at all after the shake. And little germinated spots of mold would also get spread all around and be unmistakable.

No shaking, these jars moved fast. Fully colonized in 8-10 days. I have learned from these last set of jars that the grain expand a lot once in the PC. Next set will be filled a lot less because I found they are a pain in the ass to get broken up when this full. My very first set was so under filled and these were over filled still getting my measurements right.

Lowered my rh down to 50% I thought I had read the room needed to be close to 99% as possible but I think I misunderstood that for the surface of the substrate.

I’d stop dunking them, that’s really the only thing that might help is to keep it dry to slow down mold. Those pics aren’t big enough flushes to use up all the water so they should have no problem flushing again with the water already there.

Even that might not do it though with sketchy spawn.

I have this same issue as well, but I am steam sterilizing instead of PC.  I noticed that plucking the fruitings as opposed to cutting helps reduce mold.  I also water a little less, but I still lose many bins to this.

I just broke open the 5th tub that had green mold and you are right it was still very wet in the middle. I guess that's what I get for watching YouTube videos on growing... Live and learn on that one. So about the humidity, I'm not doing dub tubs I just have them in open air of the tent since I have a hepa filter giving air in. Does this change the amount of RH needed for the tent itself? I do live in a very dry climate. I did lower it to 55% for the room itself but it just made me wonder.

I want to add some examples to this post as I am also learning how to work with grain.

Can you guys comment on the cleanliness of my jars. The second picture was contaminated 100%, but does the mycelium look ok aside from the circled part? Since then I have shaken the good jars and they seem to be recovering well.

Why did one jar contaminate? My best guess is I don’t know how to spot contamination on agar or my PC time wasn’t enough (90 minutes).

If it’s only that one jar it most likely got in from outside during inoculation.

I found out the hard way even lightly bumping the SAB can stir contams up.
