9 Days in FC, Stubborn Myc?
    #26857765 - 08/01/20 07:57 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Good evening everyone, I was hoping for any advice moving forward with my first mono grow. Purple Mystics, MSS to grain and has been in FC for 9 days. I know patience is a virtue and I don't wish to rush the process, I would just like to know from your experience if there is anything off or that may need re-evaluation.

Some tub info: 6 Qt. spawn to a brick of straight coir, I put a modest layer on top to cover exposed grain, maybe a 1/4 inch. Micropore tape over the holes, doubled on the bottom, single layer on the top holes. I have a fan near the box (facing away) that I turn on once or twice a day for an hour or so as well as an incandescent lamp, same schedule.

The mycelium colonized pretty fluffy and aggressively, and completely covered everything in about 8 days. In the 9 days since putting into FC, not much has changed. Is there anything that needs to happen to induce pinning due to the fluffy top layer? In most killer pinsets I have seen here, the sub is still quite visible, and not reminiscent of a winterscape postcard. I've heard dragging a sterile fork mentioned, I really just hope I am still inside the time window where I shouldn't be worried. Perhaps someone has some insight on my particular situation. I have also read that PMs can be pretty stubborn at this stage.

Thanks for any and all advice, I'm a total newb but am falling in love with the science! Since graining this syringe I have taken up agar, made a SAB, and have made some solid transfers, with an identical monotub awaiting launch.

Still white and fluffy so no contam scares. Are these beebees just really stubborn?

Pinning is triggered by evaporation from the top of the substrate. In my opinion you need for FAE, try removing a layer of tape from the bottom holes. Could also be slow genetics from the MS syringe.

Maybe I’m not reading the post correctly but light should be on a 12/12 schedule.. it reads to me that you only have it in a couple hours a day.  It looks good though.. probably just needs more time and some more light

Awesome, thanks so much. I will up the lighting and have already removed a layer from lower holes. Fingers crossed, thanks again!

I wouldn’t remove a layer from the lower holes, it’s already looking dry at the edges.

Okay, what should I do for the dry edges? Will misting help? Since there aren't any fruits yet, direct misting or just the walls? Re-doubling the lower holes now, hahaha thanks for all the help everyone!

Just a light mist should do the trick.

Honestly if you wanted fix sub from over drying on top maybe add a casing layer once it’s for sure 100% colonized or else it’s pointless it will just colonize the casing. But it has definitely helped me keep in moisture on my mono grows and fight contams. If casing layer is done right an non nutritional the Myc shouldn’t colonize it, and you should see pins coming through once surface conditions are optimal. Colonizing sub being first and foremost, then your others can come into play. Co2, Humidity/temp, FAE, and light.

Okay, so perhaps a light layer of coir casing on top? It seems to be fully colonized, it has looked the way it does in the picture for at least a week, with no additional growth or 'filling in' of the mycelium.

I'm really not sure how to properly judge or adjust things like Co2 or ideal surface conditions. I imagine these will come with experience, and since it's an issue I'm having now, now is the time to learn! Micropore tape allows for passive FAE, correct? House temp is typically between 72 and 73 degrees. I would like to learn more about ideal surface conditions, so I think I will be rocking the search on that. Guys, i have like 6 open tabs dedicated to some pretty deep searches getting this far. What a rabbit hole!

Don’t overthink shit. Hit the sub with a light mist at the edges and check on it tomorrow.
