What great storms and natural disasters have you lived through? * 1
    #26859101 - 08/02/20 03:02 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

I thankfully don't have much under my belt. Hurricane Isabel, Hurricane Gaston, a few tornadoes, and the eastern earthquake where Californians laughed at us for freaking out about a magnitude 5.8.

Wbu? Great floods? Wildfires? Blizzards? Sandstorms?

A 5.8 is a big earthquake even in California. California can go years without earthquakes that large. There have been 19 earthquakes in the last decade 5.8 or larger in the continental US, 7 in California.

Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines. 1991. I was a very young child at the time. Still remember parts of it vividly though. My father was assigned to Clark Air Force base. That's why we were there.  It was the second-largest eruption of the 20th century after the 1912 eruption of Novarupta in Alaska. It felt like the end of the world. The ash filled the sky and I swear on my life that it turned the sky midnight dark -- and it was noon.

afterwards the ash blanketed the entire surrounding area

We were evacuated back to the states and I got to ride in an aircraft carrier for like 4 days (the USS Abraham Lincoln).

I also have seen parts of Dallas devastated by tornadoes. 2 in particular -- one of which that slammed the very neighborhood I lived in at the time (fortunately our home was spared), and then one very recently that made national news and tore through neighborhoods within 2 miles from where I currently live.

Luckily we don't have any major natural disasters here unless one of those old volcanoes blow. I've been caught in a bad hail storm though that put me in my place we had to run into someone's random horse shed to take cover

Had a couple crazy weather experiences on family trips as a kid in the mid to late 80s. Our car got hit by lightning once on a trip to Ottawa and the antenna was just gone, vaporized we assume. There was another time we were camping on Beausoleil island in Georgian Bay and a hurricane like storm hit. We went to this storm shelter and when we got back after the storm our tent was crushed by a huge tree branch.

Hurricane Isabel 2003
A family friend who lived on a narrow peninsula in the Chesapeake bay called my mom after the storm had started asking us to come rescue her. Me and my BF drove to Annapolis and got her. Her house ended up being 3’ underwater and she never lived there again. She just died last month. She was one of the first female White House corespondents back in the 60s. Her and Helen Thomas.

The blizzard of 2010  42’ of snow
The Earthquake of 2011 5.8mag

The winner is the Mid-Atlantic derecho of 2012
That was the most violent storm I’ve ever witnessed. 70 - 80 mph winds for a half hour. Massive tree destruction. Power was out for 8 days.

Our power was restored by a crew from Florida. That whole week you saw nothing but power crews from all over. Hydro Quebec to Florida power and light.

Cool, yeah that's a nice area. Love the weathered rock.

My parents always wanted to camp there because this priest they knew liked to go there in this sailboat he had. We took the water taxi over from Honey Harbor. They stopped talking to that guy when they realized he was a virulent antisemite though. He was from Hungary.

Hurricane Carla 1961 category 5
Hurricane Alicia 1983 category 3
Tropical Storm Allison 2001

While not a hurricane, Allison would end up on record as one of the most devastating tropical storms in U.S. history. In mere days, the deadly storm system dumped 80 percent of the Houston area’s average rainfall, damaging 73,000 homes, flooding 95,000 cars and leaving more than 30,000 people stranded in shelters. Allison was responsible for 41 deaths and around $5 billion in property damage.

Hurricane Rita 2005 category 5
Hurricane Ike 2008 category 4
Hurricane Harvey 2017 category 4

When I was a kid in the 80s/90's, it used to turn our street into a river a few times every summer. Nothing new.

I always tell people, you've never seen drainage ditches like Houston has. You can fall in those things and break your neck.

Yeah as I thought about it more I realized that my memory is of an earlier earthquake that happened in the mid/early 2000s.

It was the first notable earthquake we had had in decades. I remember watching footage of a woman that panicked and jumped out of a drivethru window

That was like... under a magnitude 4.something.

Soooo... actually don't have any first hand memories of the 2011 earthquake. I just remember it damaged the washington monument.

I was probably high or asleep during the 2011 quake so my brain apparently merged the 2 memories. But I know the memories I have are from the early 2000s quake because it damaged my PS2 :feelsbadman:

I was actually asleep when it hit, but it woke me up and then a ran upstairs and stood under a door... a door made of bricks and pieces of mortar started falling on my head. It was an incredibly long earthquake and shaking lasted well over a minute, with weird vibration sounds lasting for another minute or two. Our well collapsed and clogged the pipes with mud and destroyed the pump. That and some cracked brick walls was the damage at home.

These videos have an example of the vibrations that went on and on even after the shaking stopped

The federal government shut down after the earthquake and created the worst traffic jam in the history of the city

Inside the monument. These people probably thought they were gonna die

Yeah I remember the traffic too.

Tbh I think an earthquake is the scariest thing I've experienced in and of itself. It seems so unnatural and alien to have the whole world shake.

I can only imagine what it's like with others. Like the ones that make the ground roll in waves. Can definitely see why those without science world think it a supernatural event.

I think Niffla might be winning with a goddamn volcanic eruption. I remember reading about how ash clogged up and stalled out basically everything. Never thought before how many things we have rely on vents of some sort or another. I mean technically even we do. Sounds scary to try to not breathe that shit in.

I experienced another 5.9 mag earthquake when I lived in Montreal. That one knocked out the power for a lot of the city.

https://www.earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/historic-historique/events/19881125-en.php

I also felt the 7.6 earthquake that hit El Salvador in 2001 while in Mexico City, and another aftershock visiting my sister in San Christobal de las casas in far southern Mexico. That wasn’t as pronounced as the DC or Montreal earthquakes.
