Substrate Prep for paddy straw
    #26858263 - 08/02/20 07:20 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hi again everyone.

Still on the topic of paddy straw mushroom. Wondering if any of you out there think it would be necessary to do more than just soaking the rice straw before inoculation. I've seen videos online of just soaking, other articles say it should be heat pasteurized, while others still discuss soak and compost/ferment.

It seems there is little to no information on these forums for this species.

Thanks all

thank you. Ive been over this one before. I'm not looking for backyard production but commercial - highest yields possible. What are the methods in Asia where they produce for export

If you are wanting production? I would not just soak. You will end up with  contaminated bags. Every contaminated bag costs me at least $20 from what I could have sold the mushrooms for. I would at least pasteurize the sub. I do not do straw it is to much work and actually cost me money to use it and it is way too messy.

I hope you live somewhere warm!

Here is the mushworld chapter on paddy straw: http://www.fungifun.org/mushworld/Oyster-Mushroom-Cultivation/mushroom-growers-handbook-1-mushworld-com-chapter-11-2.pdf

Not sure what you have read already but here are some more links:

https://nrcmushroom.org/mushroomprofile/Paddy_Straw_Mushroom/paddy_straw_mushroom.html
https://philmush.wordpress.com/2013/12/11/paddy-straw-mushroom-cultivation/

Do you plan to can or dehydrate your fruits? or try to get them fresh to market? In my experience they do not refrigerate well at all

Tasty little eggs though! Best of luck

Thanks SHROOMSISAY01,
Perhaps the compost/soaking from, as articles suggest, 3 to 7 days may act as a type of pasteurization killing various contams?

Thanks, Jawn876,

ahah I live in West Africa, Ghana - its warm, very!

I will check out your links.

I don't plan to dry them but rather sell fresh - interesting fact about the poor performance in refrigeration. I have read it will be about 3 days before spoiling and also they should be harvested morning and evening, so its the evening harvest i was thinking of cooling
