Growing in tropical environment
    #26857818 - 08/01/20 08:41 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hi, this is my first post here. So thanks in advance for any help you may offer.

I am learning a lot and loving this new hobby, but yet to have success. I have twice successfully inoculated grain jars ( popcorn and wheat berry, I can’t source rye here) but it’s when I transferred to tubs with coir/ vermiculite that I ran into problems. Initially the mycelium developed well with both runs, but then at some point the whole surface become covered in green mould.
I think it is because I didn’t have adequate airflow, I need to get better at spotting the moment fruiting conditions are necessary and take care to fan or ensure air exchange.
So now I am thinking to build a small greenhouse to ensure automated air exchange and potentially filter the air to prevent airborne contaminants.
I live on a tropical island in Asia so it’s naturally quite humid and warm here so I don’t know if I would need a humidifier? I was thinking to just get an in-line fan and attach a hepa filter and run that through the tent but also wondering if I had fanned the tub better and more frequently I may not have run into the mould?
I guess I am not sure if the green mould spores are in the air here so I need to filter or just need to ensure more air circulation?

Generally if you get mold before a flush the problem is not your environment but your spawn. How did you inoculate? Are you using agar?

Thanks I was using syringes but I think you are right, the contacts could have already been in there.

Spores to grain is generally frowned upon because it has a tendency to contam. I’m pretty sure that, mixed with your sterile technique, is probably where the mold first took hold. Maybe look into starting agar if you want to use grains (or vice versa, look into doing pf tek if you want to continue forward using spore syringes). Also look into a ‘still air box’ if you haven’t already.

Thanks Gayfish, I am going to start researching Agar, it seems a good place to continue.

You could try waiting for the jar to colonize and then just putting an inch of coir on top and fruiting it out of the mouth of the jar. That would almost definitely work since the grain is safely colonized.
