Annoying neighbors/ roommates/ apartment next door stories
    #26858091 - 08/02/20 01:22 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

So this family is at it again at 3 am making the occasional loud noise like they’re moving furniture or something.  It’s so inconsistent and stops for periods so I can’t just call the cops nor do I want to.  It gave me an idea for a thread though because I’m sure people have WAAAY better stories to share than I. Was hoping to read some good ones if you think you do POST IT UP

God damn I swear the people who live above me are like crackhead and or methheads.  Some stim for sure they are consistently loud late at night and walking around just unaware of how loud they’re banging is.  They’re the only ones I hear pretty much at all if I have any background noise on them and tbh they’ve improved like a ton since a few months ago I was debating calling the cops on them.  Someone did call the cops on them and then they stopped being totally over the line.  It totally tripped  me out cuz I was pulling in and my friend was legitimately passed out on some benzo combo and I’m parked and I live there but the cops are literally parked behind me all of a sudden and I’m sitting in the driver seat while my friend had copious amounts of substances in his pocket and cannot stay awake let alone answer questions.  I manage to wake him up and we get out of harms way but I’m sure they would have hassled me if they weren’t there to hassle my neighbors.  They gave me a look as they walked by I could tell I was glad they were there for something else and I live twenty feet down the way and can just lock the door.  They definitely would have searched / arrested my friend and search me ( probably not arrest but never kno)

After that whole scenario Now they’re just at the level of really fuckin annoying but don’t call the cops that ain’t cool there isn’t screaming or anything crazy.  Just honestly wonder wtf they are doing but don’t feel like being intrusive and or getting trapped in a conversation with some insane stim head.

I've had my fair share of bad neighbors, and one that sounds remarkably like the one you mention. Maybe he moved and lives above you now

Yeah I would hear the same things though. Really loud noises at all hours. I swear for like a month he was doing fucking a complete remodel or some shit at like 2 in the monring. Like this fucker was knocking down walls in the middle of the night with what sounded like a sledgehammer. I'd also hear him once a week playing his guitar (which it sounded like he was terrible at, like he'd just strum it constantly and had no idea how to play) and he'd do it from like 1 am to 4 am.

I also had this one girl who lived above me once who play music loud as fuck really late (during the week too, not just on weekends) and you'd hear her dancing and shit and stomping all over the floor up above, lol. When she'd really like a song you'd know it too because she'd put the same song on repeat for entire nights. Like she really literally would just play one song for hours.

my gf does this, Ive tried to teach her chords, but she dosnt want to learn, she just like picking up a guitar once a month and strumming the shit out of it, one time I fired up my webcam and aimed it at her and went on Omegle and I was telling people I hired a prostitute to play guitar for an hour straight, one guy was like "I want to believe you so badly but I dont"

I had a roommate disappear. He borrowed $10 for a pack of cigarettes and never returned. When I moved out, I just left all of his stuff, I didn't know what to do with it. His family never came to get it even though I asked them to.

In the lead up to that the dude dropped out of college twice, borrowed hundreds of dollars, smoked my weed, drank my beer. Then he was gone.

In the three months between his disappearance and me moving out I got visits from the police, his family, his friends, and all sort of weird visits.

Then about four or five years later I ran into him in a bowling alley about 50 miles from where him and I had lived together. He's lucky I didn't kick his ass.

I said "hi" to him, then avoided him. The dude owes me loads of cash (that I'd rather not get back if I can avoid the kid), he was willing to skip out on bills, eat my food, and while we were like best friends for maybe the first 6 months of living together, he is toxic. I became friends of his friends along the way, several of those people I hung out with for years. The dude burns bridge after bridge and is a leach.

From what I gather he turned up six or so months later, he probably leached off somebody just like me after he disappeared from my place. He was basically willing to lose his entire friend group to skip out on the money he owed me.

I was worried about him at the time, it was pretty hard dealing with his mother. The best part is that the disappearing roommate's best friend was staying with us at the time, he was a long haul truck driver and would stop in with use for a week at a time occasionally. So when the roommate disappeared, the best friend was just stuck there with me confused and freaked out too. We were all young at the time, early 20's, and partied pretty damn hard. I was getting my Master's at the time, but lots of drugs and girls were pretty much the defacto way of life. Retrospectively I get it now. He's a piece of shit, and I was probably too willing to overlook the obvious signs of trouble on the horizon. Especially since the good times were rolling, why fuck it up over a box of mac n cheese or something?

The kicker is that we lost our $1800 damage deposit because all his shit was left there.

Luckily it was short live but a girl lived above and I think would invite friends over to dance which led to hard stomping. and a schizophrenic neighbor who forgot to take his meds threw a rock through my window going off about some non existent people not paying rent

He was a good dude in many respects, but asking him to be an adult was a major issue.

Also, this was like 12 years ago, a pack of smokes was like $4 at the time. I pretty much knew something was up when he asked for $10 for a pack. Fucker probably needed gas.

Yeah I know someone kinda similar. Haven't spoken to him in years. Growing up he was in our immediate circle of friends. Many of us still communicate regularly. Not with him, though. He burned every bridge he had one by one. I could see him doing exactly what your roommate did actually.

Yeah, pretty much. After seeing him at the bowling alley he tried to reach out to me a few times via social media and I just blocked him. It was nuts for a while though. Missing persons reports, news paper interviews, and all that shit going on. Keep in mind, in the time between him going missing and apparently being "found" I had finished my graduate degree, moved away, gotten a job, started a whole new life. I had pretty much moved on.

Believe it or not I had another roommate sort of disappear as well. Although, this time it wasn't legit a missing person. My girlfriend dumped me and left me with the an entire townhouse that we had been splitting rent on. So I put up a flier and pretty much accepted the first reasonable rando that could pay the other half. We actually got along decently, but having just gotten out of a long relationship I was pretty private. I had some close friends living a few blocks away and started shaking up with one of them (that was an open lesbian, that's another story...). So I was only home a few nights a week, and the roommate was always asking me to hang out or go to the bar and I pretty much always blew him off. Well in like mid May he stops me and says that's he's going on a few week road trip and that he'd like to give me a check for rent and utilities for the month, and asked that I not cash it until when all that shit was due. I said no problem. So about six weeks goes by and he's still not back. In fact, rent and utilities are due again. I scrape by and pay it for the two of us. Keep in mind most of this dudes shit was still in the house. He had a couch, TV, playstation. Shit you would come back for.

So out of the blue I get an email from him but from an oddball address. He is asking for his half of rent and utilities. Well that kind of pissed me off because obviously I had paid all that shit for him. So I respond with quite a bit of attitude and explain that he's like $1000 behind on what he owes me and that I haven't seen you in 6 weeks, like what the fuck? It turns out it was his parents emailing me. He had told them that I was screwing him out of half the rent and utilities to get the money out of them, then took off on the road trip. He told them that I had disappeared and that he couldn't afford my half. So the parents felt pretty bad about it all, and they paid me out of pocket for the remainder of our lease, plus an estimate on utilities. I lived in the place alone for the next 4 months. It was three story, three bedroom, three and a half bath townhouse. It got pretty lonely, but a few nights a week I'd party my ass off, and the place was quite the bachelors pad (in a good way) so getting a girl back there was always a win. The parents showed up eventually and took his things. I guess he's okay now, he was struggling with being a closeted gay man (which was very obvious), and once he came out to his parents he pretty much got his shit together. We remained acquaintances for a while, he's a school teacher now. I have no real hard feelings there. Certainly oddball circumstances.

In grad school I was hired to live in a house during the two summers and manage the undergrads (keyword for protect the house) while class was in session. That had some totally wild moments. Several arrests, one person who was an aspiring rap artist fled the county only to be picked up on the side of the state. When the cops showed up looking for the rapper, the dude who was staying on the couch and selling prescription drugs ran out the door for no reason at all, the cops chased him and arrested him with a pocket of pills. I never saw either of those two kids again.

He was in an emotionally unstable time. He made the wrong decisions. In the end, it worked out. Hopefully their relationship is better now.

I spent a long time in university while maintaining an oddball career simultaneously. That meant I put myself into a bunch of odd living situations. Hell, I lived in my car for three months one year on account of defaulting on my rent (which I paid back later). I'm pretty understanding of a lot of situations, though I do have limits. Along the way I tried to be honest with the people I was around, even if it meant rejection, or admitting failure on my end.

I lived with a guy like this before as well. He had a horrible coke and alcohol habit that pretty much took the steering wheel for his entire life. I didn't know this until I lived with him myself, but the dude basically lived this lifestyle where he would befriend someone, move in with them, stop paying rent after the first couple of months, and then just live without paying rent or any of the bills until he got kicked out. Then, he'd burn the bridge and do it all over again. It was bad enough that he wasn't paying rent at my place, but I got to a breaking point when he stole a bunch of shit out of my room and pawned it off for alcohol and coke.

The sad part is that he was a friend of mine for so long before all of that. He's got a great sense of humor, similar tastes in music, we had a lot to bond over and we went through a lot of shit together. I never imagined he would just burn the bridge with me, but he did... At least for a while. Thankfully, he's doing much better now. He actually just got out of a rehab program and seems to be living a much more balanced life. He's reached out to me and apologized for being such a shithead - I'm hoping we can reconnect soon. Surprisingly, his parents helped me recover financially from the damage he did, and he's in debt to them now instead of being in debt to me.

So yeah, shitty roommate situation, but it has (somewhat of) a happy ending.

Worst neighbor story:

This isn't the worst way a neighbor could be, admittedly, but it was pretty frustrating to live next to these guys. Right after I finished school, I lived in this apartment next to a house with a couple living in it. I never really met them, but they seemed like pretty calm people. They weren't loud or rude or anything like that. The only problem was that they would go out often (sometimes like 5 nights a week) and do god knows what (I can't imagine what they were doing - definitely staying the night at another place frequently). Obviously, there's nothing inherently wrong with that situation, but the thing that made it shitty was that they had this big dog that they would just leave alone every time they went out. This dog did not like being left alone, and it would bark the entire time that they were out whenever they would leave the house. I was surprised to learn that dogs do not lose their voices or anything - they will literally bark all night if that's what they want to do, and this dog would bark all night often. I lost so much sleep because of that dog, and I felt sorry for it for being left alone so frequently. I wouldn't say the owners were completely neglectful - obviously they stopped by enough to feed it or it wouldn't have survived. Still, it was just irresponsible. It was unfair to the dog, and it was unfair to all the neighbors that had to listen to that barking.

I'm not even that much of a dog person (dogs are cool, just don't really see myself owning one), but I felt so much pity for this poor animal. There was one night where I desperately needed to sleep for an important morning at work the next day, but I couldn't sleep because of that damn barking. I was super close to calling the police, but like OP, I didn't want to get them involved.

So yeah, not the worst neighbors in the world, but definitely inconsiderate and unaware of how their life choices were impacting others.
