jars show no activity?
    #26857855 - 08/01/20 09:04 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

so this strange thing happened recently. I hydrated around 12 quarts of WBS, inoculated all of the jars. Two weeks go by. Nothing.

A few days after the initial inoculation, I hydrated 12 quarts of WBS once again, inoculated all jars. Pretty much all of them showed signs of growth after about a week, some are fully colonized nearly at this point.

I used the exact same spore syringe or both. It can't be that.

here are the things I did differently between the two:
-The latter batch was soaked for 12 hours, the former was only soaked for 6. Both were stirred, drained multiple times before the soak.
-different batches of WBS were used, although they have similar ingredients.
- On the former batch, I took the weigh off the pc after it was done before waiting until it was fully cool, I took it off for around thirty seconds or so. I put it back on. I'd never cultivated mushrooms or used a pressure cooker before, so I didn't know any better than to do this.
- the first batch, I used polyfill lids, the second batch, i used synthetic disk filters

So my question is, what happened? Why did the first round of jars not grow at all? I'm thinking it's the first reason there, that I didnt' soak the WBS for long enough, so it wasn't sufficiently hydrated. But I'm not actually sure. Dose anyone have an idea fo what may have caused this? I'm new to this, so please dont' scold me lol.

Edit: one last question I had: I can jsut further hydrate and use this WBS again, right? I don't see any reason why not?

You are shooting spores to grain. Welcome to the shit-show of whoknowswhats. You can gather literally zero data point or make any assumptions whatsoever when doing such. You did the quintessential crap-shoot process, here are the results in your jars.

Lol smartattack, I feel like you’ve muttered in your sleep the ramblings of “spore to grain fail, spore to grain faaaaaaaaaail.”

On topic: glad you got a batch going dude! Id assume like you did that it was because the first batch wasn’t hydrated properly, but I don’t think anyone could give you a definitive answer.  As said before, spores to grain is generally a bad idea, but If you got some jars going that’s awesome. Yeah you can reuse those grains that didn’t take, just make sure you hydrate them properly and run them through the pc.

There is a sign over my bed that says as much which I fall asleep to at night. I also have tattoos on my hands saying the same in case I forget.
