The great Iso shortage of 2020!

Hey guys as we all know Isopropyl Alcohol is a neccessary tool in this hobby. You have to have it. Since the Coronavirus started back in March. I have not been able to find it anywhere. I've been checking every store I walked in for months now with absolutely no luck. The whole world freaked out over the Coronavirus and bought all the toilet paper, bleach, hand sanitizer, air sanitizer, and Isopropyl Alcohol. So how are you guys getting by? I found some ethanol 95%. I was going to try and do the math to get it down to 70% but yea what are you guys doing?

The corner store at my place has it. I have found that looking for it online is pointless since people are price gouging. Try to go to physical markets/pharmacies if you can.

It's really not. You don't even need to use it at all.

That's crazy maybe it's just around here. I've went to every pharmacy and grocery store around here. Nobody has had it for months.

The math is easy! M1V1 = M2V2
Rearrange the formula so that it's (M1V1)/(M2) = V2
M1 = Original concentration = 0.95
V1 = Whatever volume you are diluting. If you're diluting, say, 500mLs of ethanol, then that is what you plug in there
M2 = The concentration after dilution = 0.70
So, for example, [(0.95)(500mL)]/(0.70) = V2
V2 would be the final volume = about 679mLs
That's the final volume, to get to that volume you just add (679-500) = 179 mLs of water

I probably could have figured the math out but thanks for the help. I was more just wondering if everyone was having the same problem and had to do the same thing?

I've been able to find it in nearby grocery stores. The only thing I absolutely cannot find anywhere is Lysol

Yea Lysol has been tough too. I've found Ozium a couple times and stocked up. I like Ozium but it's kind of expensive. And that link went too a 55 gallon drum of iso. Who needs 1500 bucks in Alcohol?

I know it's in high demand, but even in bulk that's $6.60/quart plus tax and hazmat shipping on a ~390lb drum of iso. Yikes.

Be cautious with 95% ethanol. It has to be denatured with something to avoid liquor regulations and often they use methanol to do it. Even just 5% is going to make it pretty unpleasant to use for sanitizing.
Haven't seen any iso in the big stores since March either; been coasting on a couple quarts of 70% I bought late last year. I use it very sparingly anyway and still have probably 3/4 remaining.

Ive never needed lysol I have a can of generic I bought for some reason thinking I would use it but never did its like 10 years old and all the way full haha...one of the bigger cans
But you can get alcohol if you catch them on the right day at dollar general or family dollar or your smaller pharmacies and general stores and what not, some times
Even my local small grocery stoer has had stock of "liquid hand sanitizer" that is just 80% alcohol for a long while. Smells like liquor and is in what looks like a plastic liquor bottle lol. . ...often enough to keep up supply.

I went into a store before the madness started and there was a big display of 91 iso, so I knew I was going to need it for cleaning a couple projects so I bought 8 bottles, glad I did, I havenโt seen it since...

stop wasting $ on lysol then its the perfect time to do that๐ i never ever ever use lysol. but what i do to get iso is go to walmart soon as they open and get it when shelves are freshly stocked. sometimes i have to go there and wait in line in the mornin a cpl days in a row but sooner or later youl get it. they will only let u buy 1 bottle at a time tho so be sneaky with it an load your cart up with other shit and use the self checkout. this is what i was doing up til last week where my work was able to order a 55gallon drum of 91% so now i can just bring in milk jugs and fill them up even 1 little bottle lasts me a cpl months in my spray bottle. so il just dillute the 91% down to 70% as i fill my bottle up. but if u do that at walmart u will get it eventually. it sux that h gtta do it but you can thank the covid panic ridden morons for that good luck to u๐๐

Just came back from the nearest grocery store and they were out of iso... -_-
I'd go at the butt crack of dawn if I had the self-discipline to wake up that early. I also have a Wal-Mart near me so I'll check there tomorrow. I'm gearing up on my next grow and I only have half a bottle of iso left

Other people have mentioned you can dilute the liquor Everclear as an option. I have personally never seen it at any liquor store in my state but that might work in your area. Maybe give some liquor stores a call. If its anything like a bookstore they will order for you upon request

I did what jcm said and when I finally did catch it stocked up I bought 6. Over a gallon of iso should last me years I'm sure. Walmart early in the AM and you should hopefully have some luck.

Hey thanks for the tip guys. I'm going to try Walmart in the morning. I've been bumming some from a couple of my friends and now I was going to try some everclear 190 proof. Mix that in a little water and it should work. But hopefully I'll catch some in the morning. I check Walmart all the time but it's always in the afternoon.

You kind of have to tap a shoulder for everclear. They keep it in the back room. Ask the guy at the counter. Thats how it works around here anyway.
