Should I dunk this ‘cake’?
    #26856686 - 08/01/20 06:19 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

First time grower here.....

Pulled this out of a shoebox two days ago because there wasn’t any pinning on the top, only the sides so I figured that would give them the room they need.  It’s rye grain spawned to a vendor’s pre-made mushroom compost that’s now in a tote with 3 inches of moistened perlite.  I’m assuming the blue/grey color is probably is bruised myc from under hydration but the surface doesn’t seem to want to bead any more, it just pools when I mist, even when misting from several feet away and letting mist settle.  Would dunking it and/or putting a top coat of verm help?  Any and all insight is greatly appreciated.

Looks like the pins on the side have happened because it was the best spot for them to start.

If it looks hydrated enough, not soaked, I would leave it alone with proper FAE but I also don’t really think keeping it on perlite is the best option because with perlite the air exchange is from the main bottom and through the perlite straight up, it’s used to create humidity, the sgfc is to give cakes a place to fruit but a bulk sub will not do so great inside a sgfc. But I don’t think you even have it inside an sgfc. The perlite will not help this if you ask me unless maybe you plan to fan it a few times a day to provide proper FAE.

I’d move it to a mono tub and leave it alone, or put it back in the shoebox once you let the pins grow and flush. I’d be worried that the pins would continue to grow there because they have once already. 🤷‍♂️ Might be best to just leave it and give it proper FAE or you’ll have the trouble of harvesting more side pins in a mono tub or shoe box which just sounds uncomfortable 😉

Thank you very much  for the response.  The tub it’s in is unmodified with the lid turned upside down, and I put the perlite in because I thought that the humidity would help.  Pulling the perlite and turning the tub into a mono would only take 15 minutes or so and I will happily do so it that’s the best option at this point.  I don’t think I could get it back In a shoebox without damaging the pins that are already there.  I suppose I could run pick up a 12qt tub and put it in that instead of the 56qt it’s sitting in now.

The sides were definitely the place the pins preferred, lol.  Seems to be the case with all three that I have going.  I’m not messing with the other two because they both show some signs of contamination so I’m just going to let them do their thing.  This one has been the better performer so I just want to give it the best chance to perform that I can.

Am I correct in assuming that even with proper FAE that you would still have droplets on the exterior myc?  Or is it expected to dry out somewhat?  Again, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Hey man I’m no pro but I’ve done this for 5 years and sometimes during a second flush, the tubs will look to be less moist but most of the time I’ve found they do just fine. It’s that initial pinset that really benefits from the misting and being sure there’s tiny tiny water droplets in the mycelium.

If you haven’t hydrated the tub after the first flush then I would wait til you can pick those that are ready and then dunk the tub for an hour or so. Hell even a heavy misting will be fine for hydration so long as you have proper FAE. Nothing crazy just if you’re leaving it in that tub you have it in, I would treat it like a brf cake and fan it a few times a day or simply leave the lid sort of cracked.

I will also recommend waiting for other advice! 👍

Thanks again, man.  This is the first flush, which is why I am so concerned.  The contammed ones are producing fairly well all things considered.  I just have higher hopes for the one that seems to have dodged that bullet.  Hopefully other will chime in, but I really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

If you plan to keep this hobby up. Isolate any contaminated tubs and if anything is sporing already, get rid of it.

You don’t want to increase your homes sporeload even more when it’s preventable. You live and you learn as you go!

I moved the funky ones clear to the other side of the house when I noticed the contams.  What’s strange is that everything was inoculated on the same day and the ‘bad’ ones are outperforming  the good ones by a considerable margin. The only environmental differences are temperature and light source, but those  are probably big differences in the broad scheme of things.

Contams can cause mycelium to try growing incredibly fast to try and grow quick enough to beat out any contams but it rarely ever succeeds indoors.

Having a contam present can cause mycelium to look like it’s doing incredible but it may only be performing so well because there’s a contam.

Not saying this is the case with yours but just so you know!

Makes sense. Good to know, thanks!
