Casing a Mushroom Grow Bag

I am not sure if my terminology is going to be completely correct, but I want to take one of my current mushroom spawn bags and fruit it right in the bag once it is 100% colonized. I saw a few people on the site that simply cut the top of the bag off approximately one inch above the top of the spawn and placed a thin casing layer over the top. Is that it? Can I just use the coco coir that I have after prepping it with a bucket tek? Do I have to cover the bag at all? Misting?

If you cut it an inch above the grain line, the bag will need to go in a monotub or greenhouse. I'd cut it just below the seal, then you can fold the bag and clip it shut. Peat based casing is best. Mist if needed.

The one I saw on this site looked like it was cased with a thin layer of coir and made no mention of being covered. There is no possible way to accomplish this task without covering the bag after cutting it that low?

You can grow them in open air if you’re around throughout the day to watch and mist whenever it’s dry, as long as you have decent RH in your house. I don’t get the aversion to cutting it a little higher though so that the top can be clothes pinned or something to trap a little humidity.

I am not averse to it at all. Just wondering. I will definitely go that route. Is one inch of casing of coir adequate?

Ahh I see
1” is pretty thick. But then again you’re talking about casing just straight grains right? They will be very short on water so a thicker casing layer would probably be best but I honestly don’t know how thick is too thick in this case. You could probably find some old teks for casing grain on here and see what they were using.

Probably better to just use a shoebox then right? I don’t want to overcomplicate things I just want fruits.

Yeah I’d say shoe box it with plain coir or coir/verm. That’s the surest way I know

I am going to do two monotubs this time with four of my grain spawn bags (two per tub), but I am going to do a shoe box for the one bag that is the oddball. I have three different varieties I am trying to work with this time. Do you think I am taking the wrong steps? Should I take a step off of a bridge?

How much do these spawn bags weigh? The size I do one spawn bag is plenty to do a monotub (5-7 lbs depending on grain)

I only measure out 2160 grams dry when prepping the rye this time since I was thinking in terms of jars instead of bags. This is my first go around with bags and I was afraid to overfill. I couldn’t find much good data on weight per bag. Sounds like I screwed up bad. Sorry I mislead you. I have what amount to 432 grams dry (so now whatever that weighs wet) per bag. Can you adjust your advice to help my dumb ass?

432g dry , say 40% moisture added, must be a bit less than 1.5lb per bag. Could I see a pic, must be those small bags.
You probably want about 3 or 4 of those bags for a monotub.

Can I use a smaller tub for two bags and shoebox the solo bag?
