Substrate Experiment...Monster Caps

Substrate Experiment

I have been experimenting with different bulk substrate recipes for the last year. Recently I added coffee to the mix, and have seen some surprising results.  (I apologize for my measuring units, I'm still fine tuning to create more consistency).

56 qrt. Bin
- 48oz Cambodian Cub. Grain Spawn
- Coconut Coir (approximately 1 gallon dry)
- 1.5 cup gypsum
- 3 cups ground coffee
- Tap water (until desired water content)

Followed recipe for x2 56 qrt bins. The first bin was completely contaminated. The second was a smashing success. Complete mycelial mat, and an insane first flush. However the fruiting bodies were immense...Like too big. In the past I usually have one juggernaut that stands out, but every single mushroom was huge. The largest one was 14.7g (dried), I'd say the average weight dried, was around 7 grams per mushroom (including outliers). As the 1st round of harvest continued the mushrooms got slightly smaller, but still bigger than most I've seen. I was hoping the second flush would be skinnier, but the bin was contaminated with fungus gnats, and after the first flush, contaminated by mold.
I really liked the success, and want to continue using coffee to increase productivity, but would prefer a smaller, more accessible fruiting body.

I've been told too much moisture content can lead to shorter, thicker mushrooms, but I kept this bin on the drier side, just enough to keep some light condensation on the walls.

I've also heard that oxygen deficiency can result in taller skinnier mushrooms(?). I fanned these 3 times a day, manually with the lid.

Also the fungus gnats settled in sometime during the 1st pining (or thats when the larva hatched), and I was battling the excision of fungus larva infested substrate, which lead to approximately 5% loss to the first round of pinning.

Does anyone know how to manipulate the substrate, moisture content, oxygen availability or any other variable(s) to yield a taller, skinnier fruiting body?

Holy shit
Made some clones?

For fungus gnats:
The mature gnats just come to eat,
the youngens lay fucking eggs.

If i see them around, i attract them with
a glass of vinegar with a shot red wine,
they`re finished soon then.
Also lavender to the windows is a weapon
against insects.

Can`t tell much about using coffee,
i just used it for grain soak water earlier.

Damn those are beautiful and beefy lol. I really hope you made some clones

Coffee grounds and contamination are very often found together. I would just use coir/verm and a different spore print if you want more standard sized cubes and clean grows. Or that same culture might act differently without the coffee grounds and nasties.

I like chunkers some times but they’re a pain to keep around long and I feel bad breaking them up.

Yeah, if not prepared well.
Mold prefers exactly the slightly acidic ph value
that coffee brings in.
With the right amont of lime,
you get balance in the value.
And of course pasteurizing the whole substrate.
Personally i don`t need this at all,
but i like seeing such experiments.

So finally gypsum doesn`t do much to the ph value.
When with coffee, i`d go with lime.

Unfortunately I haven’t done any cloning😬
I assumed I needed a flow hood to start that ...? Which I’m working towards.

Flowhood may be great, but i trust my SAB
for a very long time now

I’m glad you had luck with your gnats! Mine were pretty tenacious. I tried apple cider vinegar, wine, I even used a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (Some researched I did showed that you could denature the pathogens with a 5% solution. It’s supposed to kill any bacteria, larvae, as well as any fruiting bodies as casualties, but Supposedly the mycelium produces enough peroxidase to survive). On my first flush I used a 5% HP solution.
All that said, it didn’t work😑, the gnats still completely took over the bed.
I’m doing some pasteurization experiments with hydrogen peroxide. I’ll post a link to the results later once it’s finished!

I’ll try lavender next time.

I tried the SAB when cloning oyster mushrooms and it was a big failure. I’ll look up some videos and retry my techniques.

I’ve been looking into using Cold Water Lime, do you have a ratio (lime/sub) you’ve found successful?

I thought about capsuling them, but I couldn’t bring myself to grind those beauties up...
