Can anyone tell me how to distinguish the difference between pins and perilite in your substrate?

Perlite shouldn’t be mixed into your substrate. Where did you read to do that? Most people use coco coir or a combination of cococoir/verm. Perlite is used for a SGFC when fruiting BRF cakes to keep humidity in the tub however the cakes should never directly touch the perlite imo

Pins are fungi, perlite are obsidian rocks
I bet you confuse it with vermiculite. Perlite has just some moisture on the surface, and will dry out fast in substrate. It doesn't hold water as verm does.
With verm on the surface it's sometimes hard to tell. Have some pics?
Edit: I just remember some time ago i saw some premade bags, with perlite mixed to the soil. Could be possible then, but makes no sense to me.

U used the wrong "coir". That looks like potting soil.

obsidian is dark solid glass not perlite which is white and airy. different things but yes silica rich volcanics but like saying perlite is granite which its not other then high silica.
wait a day and see if it grows lol. perlite is hard and porous mushrooms are soft and squishy and look solid. kinda a silly question asking how to tell differnce between life and rocks that only similarity is white color

Not much different. Perlite form from obsidian glass over time, as water gets into cracks and builds up minerals. EDIT: So not exactly the same thing, but the base of it.

Thnxx, next time I'll be sure to get a brick of coir, my wife works at the dispensary and this is what they call coir but yes it's potting soil lol, I can't stand the perilite in it it dries it out too.

lol. and just in the ancients way of not spreading misinfo. obsidian and perlite are not minerals deposited by water they are volcanic meaning they come from a volcano and cool quickly giving them there textures. imagine eh black glass coming down a volcano can be found in yellowstone volcanics. but yes quartz can be deposited under heat and pressure with water flowing up fractures which is different from amorphous crystals like perlite and obsidian.
130 posts since 99? uh?
carry on!

Perhaps we talk past each other. I´m German, maybe i didn`t catch the right technical terms
I meant first there is obsidian from lava with low mass fraction cooling down. From weathering obsidian gets cracks. Moisture gets in there and builds up minerals over long time. Finally the once black obsidian is converted into grey porous loose stone, perlite. I`m pretty sure about this, i remember a big presentation about.
No offense, it was a nice conversation But nevertheless, not good for substrate.
