Failed Casing, Please Help
    #2684964 - 05/16/04 12:31 AM (19 years, 10 months ago)

A couple of questions:

1) What's the longest I should wait for myc to take over a casing?
2) if it smells bad, what should I do? (kinda like sweet vinager at this point)

The crumble cake has been in the casing for over a week now and no sign of mycilium growth. not even in the substrate layer. It seems that all growing has stopped. what could be causing this?

I'm using a 50/50 verm/peat mix. (no lime) and in a terrerium at 75 degrees with 100% humidity. faning once a day.

please help, I hate to see this batch go to waste.

They started in the incubator, but after 5 days of no mycilium growth, I took them out into the terrerium hoping that the gas exchange would help.

Do you think the lack of lime or some sort of contames are stunting the growth?

"kinda like sweet vinager at this point"

I wouldn't worry about it. It's probably just ammonia, that's ok, you can even smell it on fresh cakes.

I seem to be having the same prob, I ran out of verm so I finished with peat, it seems like you need the lime for peat. I stripped my casing abot a week ago and its just now starting to recover. I hope to see pins next weekend.

Yeah i would deffinetly think that youd need to use lime or crushed oyster shells when casing with peat it will help bring down the acdity of the peat.
