What’s the NSW etiquette on wild patches in public areas?
This is my first winter season and I’ve been searching 2hours from home.
It’s important to me to be a responsible, sustainable, and fair forager.

So I found a patch last week. It’s situated in a public reserve.
I found it on a Monday. I picked about 50% (100grams wet) and left some for the community.
Did as much flicking as I could to spread spores. Tried to minimise the amount of disruption to the mycelium as possible, although wasn’t using scissors so did the best I could.

Anyways, after putting a post somewhere else I was advised it’s a good idea to learn about your patch and that a follow up visit was a good idea to see how it was progressing.
I also figured, that if it was a “well known” spot, waiting 5 days would be good form to give others a chance to pick a few.

So upon returning this morning. The patch had sprouted more fruit after a bit of rain midweek.
I picked 120g wet, leaving the really young pins behind to grow and release spores.

Questions: What can I do to help maintain the health of this patch so that it’s there for years to come. Should I be putting some fresh woodchips on or anything like that?

Have I breached any etiquette with my current actions.

I also found this little patch just around the corner. Left all of the pictured ones there to grow seeing I had a decent load already.

Went back to visit this patch today and it looked as though both patches had not been visited. Although they’d both dried out and the mushrooms weren’t in very good condition.
At this stage, there’s no fruit to attract anyone on the spot. I’m assuming I’ll now have to wait until the next significant rainfall in the area both bothering to return.

It’s a good little spot though, you can tell that the spores have blown around the area a fair bit as I’ve found a few scattered single subs in the surrounding area.

Come on rain.

I'd love to hear from members around the Sydney/Blue Mts & Wollongong/Southern Highlands areas if they have found many actives in the last week?

A couple of weeks ago spent a day in Belanglo - nothing.

Have searched bushland & woodchipped parks in the north east of Sydney 1 - 2 days a week - nothing.

I spent the a full day on Sunday (it rained nicely on Saturday) searching pine forests around Jenolan / Hampton / Oberon area & can report nothing active was spied. Actually few fungi at all aside from Grey Knights + some Cotinarius sp.

On the way back up the Mountains stopped at a few woodchipped parks etc & again nothing active.

I wish Pan Cyan season was still about. Hunting for subs is a bloody mission :frown:

Unless I’m wrong and cyans are still growing. But due to the cold mornings I guess subs are the only ones to keep an eye out for.

Tell me about it. This season has yielded barely anything for me. I found 4 subs on my patch this whole season. Last year I got at least 10 on that patch and found subs in other patches too. I feel like it hasn't been cold enough or not enough rain. Anyone had better success?

Any tips on hunting this late in the season? Higher altitudes perhaps? I'm in the Blue Mountains

I've been going out in BM most weekends with no luck also. Fingers crossed on finding some soon. Any tips would be much welcomed.

Is the season over or still going? Went out this Saturday and last Saturday and found nothing. Plenty of other mushrooms but no subs. Made such an effort too

Hey Sativa420,

I am certainly not an expert and happy to be told otherwise but feel you are doing the right thing !!! Nice work on looking after your patch and being considerate of others.

Hey Hey everyone,

With the week of rain I headed up the coast from Sydney to the pines forest park at Laguna/Martinsville 2325.

I reckon I was there for about three hours and found load of elegant blue webcaps, some small brown mushrooms, and nothing really else.

I was quite surprised, thinking the pine forest would be an absolute ring in for subaeruginosa.

It has been an average second season for me this year compared to last year. A couple of patches I found last year that were yielding 100+ subs from a single flush haven’t even produced one this year. And the other patches have only flushed a couple of times for very little.
Have still managed around 50-60g dried which is nothing to sneeze at I guess.

I was found by my first patch last week in the eastern Suburbs in Sydney, a very healthy one too. Found another smaller patch nearby but the strong winds the next couple of days seemed to have caused some damage. Feel very lucky to have found it in Sydney as I heard they are rare to find in the metro area.
