Curious Question about a brf jar
    #26851860 - 07/29/20 01:34 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

On Sunday I inoculated 6 half-pint jars of brf with CRS from MS syringe, everything looked good at the time. Today I was checking to see if there was any visible growth and notice that one jar has clearly visible contamination. It also has two of the strongest looking colonization points of the 6 on the opposite side from the contamination. I understand that the most likely response is to just trash the whole thing, and that's almost certainly what I will do. But just out of curiosity, I was wondering if anyone had ever attempted to rescue a spawn at this early a stage and move it to a fresh jar of sterilized brf? I'm tempted to try it JUST for the sake of the experience because I have brf and a couple of jars handy that I can spare. But thought I'd poke The Collective first to see if anyone else had first hand accounts of such an attempt. I also realize going in that there is an almost complete chance of failure, I just find myself with a little extra time and materials today to indulge. Will upload some pics as soon as they finish uploading from my phone.

This is the side with the contam, just below the verm layer:

This side has the two spawn points:

My apologies for the glare, I can try tot ake some better pictures if needed.

I don't even see the spawn points. How can you tell they're the strongest? It's hard to tell what you're even planning on saving.

the glare ended up covering up the visible spawn. Didn't matter though, took the jar outside to the compost pile to open it and the entire top was completely covered in what I assume was cobweb mold. Just dumped it all out and washed the jar really well before taking it back inside.
