Float valve
    #26847046 - 07/27/20 01:23 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

I am building steamer with float valve. I don't have pipe/hose with pressure. I will use elevated bucket with water and then hose to float valve in drum. Is this enough pressure for float valve to work?

Someone told me it was. I haven't tried it yet though. But I do say I know I don't steam off a ton of water, so it makes sense to me that a slow trickle of water from the setup you are describing would work. I may even still setup similar sooner or later.. depending on whether I run water or not.. So if you try it let me know how well it works before I try it.. I am not in a hurry yet so...

Rule of thumb is .5 lbs of pressure per foot of elevation. So even if you have to go 8 feet you would have approx 4 lbs pressure. I would think that should easily operate a float valve.

Thank you guys, you're really helpful and kind. Great forum!!

I have another quick question: does it makes difference between top fruiting and side fruiting (asking for oysters and lion's mane).

I'd go with fruiting through holes cut in the side of your bags, the bag forms a seal around your blocks that allow your pins to poke through where you want them to, providing you haven't pulled the bag away from the block with your blade to create air pockets for pins to form. That seal will also prevent drying. I recommend this for manes and oysters other than kings. Fruit kings from the top. Kings are also best fruited in lower temps.

Okay, so side fruiting.
So "cut rectangle hole" or just "one slice and leave bag"?

I disagree with the side fruiting thing. Slicing the side of the bag you will get pins under the bag. Because the side of the bag will be wavy and when you slice the bag it is impossible to keep the bag tight because of the waviness the bag will lift. What I do is colonize my Bags right side up then flip the bag upside down and slice the bottom of the bag from corner to corner. The bottom of the bag will be flat and tight against the sub. Do not use the tip of the blade to slice the bag lay the blade as flat as possible this will cause you to use as much of the blade as possible and you are less likely to lift the bag. Side fruiting also causes the bag to tip because of the weight of the fruit. Doing it this way will cause a very fine slice and you may not be able to tell the slice is there. You will not get pins under the bag. Once the bag lifts because of the size of the fruit you may get a few pins under the bag but they are easy to clean up. One slice makes harvesting much easier. I get one Big cluster of fruit that I grab and wiggle back and forth and one bag is harvested.

Maybe we have little misunderstanding here. I will slice the bottom of the bag where is the densest, but I've seen people turn bags around so they "top fruit" or "side fruit" them on shelves.

You can slice the bag where ever you want it will still fruit. I have found that the bottom of the bag is the best place in my opinion. But opinions are like noses everybody has one and they usually have a couple of holes in them. Just do some experimenting and find what works best for you. But I believe you will come up with the same conclusion the bottom of the bag is the best.

They say customers prefer the look of side fruiting vs top fruiting. I am working on side fruiting for that very reason, though I can't say for certain one way or the other yet. I have a thread about fruits falling off the bag and pulling the bags off the shelves. I won't re-type everything I encountered in this thread. You can go read the other one if you are interested. I do have to say that when breaking the clusters up to sell and weigh it sure is easy to just peel/pick the mushrooms off from the bottom up.

VS https://www.theholymushroom.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/spawn-bag-1024x545.jpg

I dunno.. its what I have heard mentioned on here before. Maybe it was just the areas and for some people.. I think space wise I calculated I could get a few more bags if I did the vertical walls of shrooms, too. But with my falling bag problem -> :crazy2:

And generally speaking, they side fruit off the trees and such in their natural habitat. Not that you can't find them top fruiting say if you toss your spent blocks in your garden but... So, too I think there is that natural look appeal with side fruiting. At least this is what I have heard on here.

Most commercial farms I know sidefruit, especially the big ones, some do both on the same bags. But both is possible, test and see what works best in your conditions.

must be location on side or top fruiting... DutchMyco, do you know what they do to keep the bags from falling off? I am using the smaller 5-6 lb bags if that matters much... Although, I want to go to the bigger bags once I get more money made and all that.
