About to fruit, beige spot, is it contaminated? Please help!
    #26849323 - 07/28/20 06:30 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

I have 12 small containers that are ready to fruit today. All had same treatment and consist of CVG and rye grain substrate. One has a small patch that is uncolonized. I am not so concerned about this one. However one of them has this small beige patch on it and I am concerned that if I fruit it with all the other ones, the contamination will spread if it is in fact contamination. Can you please help me ID what this is? Thank you so much.

Keep an eye on it but I believe you should be ok. At a glance it doesn't look like a contam.

Thank you! Much appreciated. Would you know what it could be even if it is not contamination? I know that mycelium sometimes releases a yellowish substance as antibiotic to combat bacteria but I have only seen this in PF jars. This would be my first successful bulk so I am still learning about what can pop up on trays.

Also any reason why sometimes a small patch of substrate will not colonize?

Thanks again.

Bacteria usually will stop a spot from colonizing. I’ve had little spots like the size of a pea not colonize, then around harvesting the first flush that spot will turn green once trich gets in there.

That beige thing could be bacteria or a mutant pin, though I don’t see other knots around. Either way if it’s in it’s own tub it’s no risk to any other subs right now.

When you get the trich at first flush like you mentioned, do you then take it outdoors? What do you do to remedy the situation?

As for the tray, it will not be on its own but with 5 others in a SGFC. That is why I am concerned about it...

Thank you.

I’m not sure how sketchy it would be to keep contaminated/clean things together in the same tub. A lot of people would say get it out right away (this is assuming definite contam which I don’t think you have yet) but there are spores in the air all the time landing on cakes and substrates and as long as they’re healthy they don’t let anything take hold. Still I’d probably sequester a cake if it was moldy but still producing, just in case.

Myself I will keep a sub for a second or third flush depending on the level of contamination. Sometimes trich just sits in a few little spots and seems content. But if it showed up during colonization of bulk I’d just toss it because that happened a few times when I was first learning with manure and even trying the outdoor thing I never got fruits if I saw mold before 80% colonization.

This is in tubs and shoe boxes though so everything is in its own container environment, not shared like in a Sgfc.
