Re: Psilocybe semilanceata mycelium on cakes ...so far [Re: Zenn]

So I decided to grow grass on top of these again to get more roots into the cakes. I was going to try reuse these cakes after doing so. But here are the pics of some little white formations happening on all 5 cakes. Thoughts on what it could be?

Sorry to be a pest lol, just wondering if anyone thinks it could be the mycelium is still alive and feeding on the old grass roots and grass cuttings?

Any time I trim them I just add the grass cuttings back on top of the cake, there is a very fine whispyness gathering over the clippings, I cant quite get a good enough picture of it to show just yet as it is so fine. It is also hard to find photos of examples of this type of mycelium. Best 2 examples I found are these ( one from erowid, one from shroomery):

toss in the grass!  isnt wise to reuse the cakes for several reasons so dont do that! if at first it didnt work why would it  if tried again?  tuf to get moisture correct. also contams, spent cakes have less nutrients and mushroom pee.

yes grass seed comes pre inoculated from nature with its symbiotic myco.

Albeit not wise to reuse, mind if I tell you my reasoning for trying it?

due to an error in too much water I added before casing, I wondered if doing same process again but not making the same mistake would work out better (I get it, that's still better to start again entirely. )

Each of the cakes doesnt smell bad, all just smell like dirt like if you dug into the ground.
Also each cake had no visible contamination apart from what is happening on top of the cake. I wondered if this was due to the fact ps. Semilanceata is good at competing or hindering other things:

"Laboratory tests have shown P. semilanceata to suppress the growth of the soil-borne water mold Phytophthora cinnamomi, a virulent plant pathogen that causes the disease root rot. When grown in dual culture with other saprobic fungi isolated from the rhizosphere of grasses from its habitat, P. semilanceata significantly suppresses their growth. This antifungal activity, which can be traced at least partly to two phenolic compounds it secretes, helps it compete successfully with other fungal species in the intense competition for nutrients provided by decaying plant matter."

As for Symbiotic relationship with grass, I did read somewhere it is considered by some to be more of a parasitic type relationship? but I cant currently find where I read that. Unless of course symbiotic and parasitic are the same thing, then that was my misunderstanding.

if it turns out that they really are just done fair enough. I was originally going to throw them out after it failed before, I thought they were dead till these little signs of life. I'm just curious to observe whatever it is I guess.

What should I search for to find semi agar recipes?
The weak growth on my plates could be nutrient based.

Hm that's a good question. What about rabbit poop tea agar? Or like use straw (or combo of both) to make a tea, strain with fine filter so you have a clear tea and make agar with that? I know theres been lots of different types of agar recipes like using dog food/kibble etc?

I tried something similar with Ps. Cyanescens on agar made with oak shavings tea, seemed to far prefer that over potato or malt agar.

Just try give it what it likes to eat. Experiments are how we learn
