Hey guys, So I fucked up somewhere and can’t figure out where. I’ve been trying wbs Tek. 5lbs wbs rinsed and soaked. Added to large grow bag with about a cup of verm at the bottom. Pc for 90 min. Let cool over night. Added spores via syringe. Bags have not been opened since. Seen a few grains turning green, red, and splotches of yellow. I’m not sure why this happened. But it appears to have gotten 4 bags and 4 jars. I kept them all in a plastic tote with the top on to keep dark. Temp is has been between 70 and 75. Not sure what other details would help. So please ask. I know these bags have got to go. But I don’t want this to happen t this scale again. Any help would be great. Thanks

Here's where it went wrong. Clean up on agar first for grain or you'll get contams a lot of the time. Guessing you had dirty spores.

I haven’t started with agar yet. I’ve done a lot of reading up on it though and plan on using it. Could humidity be a cause? I have noticed sweating in the bags. Could keeping the bags in a sealed container also contribute.

Well the cause is almost certainly a dirty syringe... The sweating is most likely from the contams... Moisture turning up out of nowhere is usually a smoking gun for some bacteria in your jar/bag.
Are you allowing gas exchange? You can't seal up a bag/jar airtight -- it needs to exchange gas. You need to use micropore tape or SFD lids to let it breathe, without letting contams in.
That being said it's still likely the spore straight to grain is the problem.

So ya a few things here. 1. Spores to grain is always a crapshoot because most syringes have atleast a few unwanted bacteria. 2. I dont believe they should be in a sealed tote even though all they need gas exchange. Its probably not the cause of your problems but something to pick up. 3. They dont need to be in pure dark. Light is good for mycelium in all stages of growth. Keeping it all covered and in darkness is outdated information. 4. Humidity is likely NOT the cause of your problem and the sweating in the bags and stuff is because of the contamination.
Edit; I'm a slow typer and she beat me Haha but ya basically

Hmmm you are probably right. I did have fae in my jars. The holes were covered with Micropore tape. But I folded over my grain bags and taped them restricting air flow. Rookie mistake. I didn’t notice any excess moisture in my grain jars. The grains actually started looking kinda dry. I guess the need for fresh air means that putting the bags in a covered container was a bad idea. I’m ordering agar supplies as we speak. Sucks to start from scratch again. But this is one of the most interesting things I’ve ever tried.

I have a cake that just started pinning so I’m hoping to get a few good prints. And transfer straight to agar.

Agreed!!?I’ve spent so many hours here over the last few months. But as with anything mistakes will still come.
Is it possible that the syringe to bag added to much moisture as well? I did the 24hr soak 30 min dry with the wbs. No excess moisture got in during pc.

Always reassuring when someone says the same stuff without realising =P

FAE and GE (gas exchange) are two different things. FAE is allowing moving air into your myc, usually once you have it in a tub to evaporate mist or whatnot. GE is what you have by covering with micropore tape -- basically stagnant air, that still allows exchange of CO2.

Thank y’all so much for the advice.
Also, Do you think Micropore on fae and ge holes on a mono tub is a bad practice. I’ve lost a few cakes a few weeks back and am experimenting. Only bc I see people argue both sides

If you're doing cakes, maybe just do a simple shotgun fruiting chamber with a bunch of perlite:
Updated PF Tek Guide: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24179086#24179086
If you're doing a bulk grow, a lot of people don't use any holes:
BOD's Easy AF UnBODified Monotub TEK (No Holes No Polyfil): https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22337800
A lot of people do use holes, and dial it in using micropore tape:
Pastywhyte’s Ez dialed monotubs: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26140339/fpart/1/vc/1
Honestly I think the message is try the proven TEKs, and find what works for you.

Thank you. Looks like I’m doing the last link. I started placing tape over certain holes I know the a/c is hitting. I have a pretty good flow in my room. The humidity was dropping from 95 to 75 after 2hrs. So far I go from 95 to 85 per 2 hours since my fist adjustment yesterday. Looks like I’ll be covering up a few more.
