Questions regarding growing in shallow containers
    #26847204 - 07/27/20 05:50 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hello everyone,

since a couple of my jars have visible contamination, I now have significantly less spawn that anticipated. Therefore my grown has to be downsized.

My idea is to use a rectangular (25cm X 25cm x 10cm) transparent plastic container. It used to contain store bough cookies and has a lid that can sits rather tight (for long term cookie storage). The FAE should work by not pressing the lid down, leaving a thin air gap.

TL;DR Can I use a container which is to shallow for pins / full fruits? Will the fruits push the lid up, if it only lays on top (thin plastic)?

PS: If I had to guess, 1qt of spawn + 150-200 dry coir would be sufficient to fill the box. Is this a sane ratio?

PPS: If the lid will be pushed up, I would put the small box into the large tub I intended to use in the first place. Is there anything I have to ensure to to avoid further contam? If water pools at the bottom of the larger tub, bad things might grow.

EDIT: Found a picture representing the type of container I consider using

Nice pic, it already has fruited
You can use lots of different containers,
yours is in volume of a shoebox.
Your ratio will be ~1:2, that`s good.
Your container volume is about 6 quarts,
so you could even go for the double amount,
so to say 2qt spawn to 4qt coir.
They push up lids easily.
I also place them in a bigger tub,
but that`s shoeboxes 3 in a row.
Of course you can do it, you shouldn`t
be afraid of a bit water at the bottom.
Water doesn`t pull contams, stall air does.
Pour out when harvesting.

Good luck my friend  :cookiemonster:

How much spawn do you have? Use one jar to make several more jars of spawn. Then you can combine all of them. Every year I keep a master spawn jar for about 7 months before making more spawn jars. Heck, if you have very little spawn, case the jars and place into your large container. Several options to look at.

Idk how shallow you can make a sub but I’ve seen people do well on 1.5 inch depth.

I got about 1.5qt available ready at the moment. My grain is staggered in time, so maybe the batch will have some more. You wrote that you keep your spawn for a long time. Maybe I could combine the next batch with the current one.

There is no reason that you can't. As long as your jars have no contamination, they will last for months. Take some of your spawn and inoculate another 10 jars. Should be ready in a couple of weeks.
