why don’t I see people casing their grain jars the same as brf jars? I am innoculating rye jars with a vermiculite casing on top to act as my contamination filter, same as brf jars...... but I don’t see anybody else casing their grains until it goes to the bulk sub.... does grain not contaminate as easily? I’d appreciate insight from someone.

Most people use a SFD (synthetic filter disk) or Polyfil as a filter on grain jars instead. Here’s a good Tek for Lids Here’s another one Bods easy Polyfil lid. Keep In mind most people are using agar to inoculate grains so they just open the lid in the SAB or flow hood and drop a piece of colonized agar in on the grains. You can do the same with a spore syringe but it’s a lot more likely to contaminate.

This question will answer itself when it comes time for you to shake those grains, man.

Thank you for the link, good info there. May I ask what is the main reason for not doing a casing with grain jars like we do for brf ? I can’t seem to track the logic behind it down! Just trying to fully understand. Also, one last thing, am I okay to case my grain jars with vermiculite ? I can’t see it harming anything

From the quick video (should be a picture btw) it looks like your choice in a lid is a fully unmodified gasket side down metal lid and its pulled a vacuum.. Maybe im wrong cuz the angle isn't good enough to see in any detail but hopefully thats not the case.

Can you clarify a little further as to what you are saying? I don’t think it being too difficult to wipe away the casing layer. I’m sure the grain doesn’t hold together nearly as well as the Brf Cakes do when colonized , but I never saw that as being an issue.... maybe I am incorrect. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. a little extra verm isn’t going to hurt anything in my coco / rye/ verm / gypsum mixture, one would think.

I have drilled four fae holes into each jar lid. , a small casing of vermiculite on top, with cooked rye underneath... the jar you saw had not been pressure cooked yet, so no vacuum. Thanks for looking out.

It will probably work the way your doing it but you won’t be able to shake the jar like stated above. Normally once grain is about 20-30% colonized you give it a good shake and it disperses the grain and makes it colonize much faster. The way your doing it you will have to let all the grain colonize without shaking it.
