Assuming a cube is a cube, is a cube... which ones are easiest to grow?
    #26847489 - 07/27/20 09:38 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

I know not everybody agrees that a cube is a cube. (I do). But i'm not here to argue that. I just want to know what is the easiest mushroom (any species) to grow. Or even stones.

Is there a ease of cultivation chart somewhere that I have missed?

Mushroom species list:
1. Easiest
2.
3.
4.
5...

Cubes list:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5...

Sclerotia:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5...

I doubt it matters, but Golden Teacher and B+ are popular.

:whathesaid:

Also, most PE types are really slow growing and some need a casing layer, so these may be a lil more difficult than others.

I have always noticed Cambodians are a bit faster than other grows I've done. But in reality it all comes down to genetics and environmental factors

I’m a newb but I had B+ BRF jars fully colonize in just over 2 weeks from inoculation. First fruits in less than 1 month from inoculation. Which seems very fast

#1 Stropharia & #2 Texas Orange Cap. Thats like 95% of all my grows cause you can do them as MS and reliably get canopies.

I’m not sure about cakes but with shoeboxes a month from inoculating jars is about right.

Never done stropharia but I agree on toc, plenty of awesome ms grows with it. Fast too.

I've been growing PE for about 4 years from a single spore syringe I bought in 2016. A little slower than others, but the yield is well worth it. Solid stems. First flush yields about 25-28 gms. Easy to grow, I think so.

PE and APE seems to be slow on agar too. Or is just mine?

Yep, they're monsters. Big beefy shrooms. Everyone should try growing them at least once, but you probably won't stop after you see the results.

Ape started out very slow on agar for me. Once the plate got about half colonized it seemed like it sped up. I spawned some TOC and ape the same day and the TOC was visibly recovered after less than 24 hours and ripping through while it took the ape about 2 days to recover and really start showing signs of colonizing but again once it got going a bit it sped up and I had myc poking through the top layer around 8 days, full colonization in 10-11 days and now it’s just thickening up.

To the OP if you’re looking for the simplest way to get actives for a trip or three I’d probably say growing stones, since you just need clean inoculate and a jar or bag of grain that will just sit there for a couple months. As far as cubes, any of them except mutant varieties. TOC is extremely fast but I hear can be weak in potency. I haven’t tried any yet but they stained a lighter blue/green instead of the dark blue of the PE6 I’ve been growing. I know staining isn’t always indicative of potency but mostly I think it is lol.

Yeah. That's my thoughts too. Growing stones. Just got one Galindoi print coming from Marketplace. Not easy to find prints for stones. 4months into this hobby and I have failed to see even one pin. I know PE stands for penis envy now. Does PE6 means 6 inches? Not much to be envious about :rotfl:

Depends on girth I suppose and where you stand currently. But PE6 is short for TX PE6 which is a cross of a Texas variety and PE, the 6th gen maybe. It was release too early and mostly reverted back to a regular cube.

If you haven’t seen pins in 4 months of work I can only guess you’ve been trying to skip the agar step. For stones it’s even more important than with cubes that you have totally clean inoculate because cubes can be grown in a small window even with sketchy spawn, as long as it’s not too bad, then you might see some mold around the first flush. But with stones they need to grow for months to become potent (at least that’s what I’ve always heard and I never cut any grows short to test) so if you go spore straight to grain there will be plenty of time for anything nasty in there to fully take over.

That’s assuming you haven’t been trying to clean stuff on agar first, if you have been you have to look at your technique and process

I did. I jumped straight into agar because I happened to have a pc on hand and had learned agar in uni. As far as I can tell, there are no contamination in my tubs. I took shortcut though, by using unmodified tub and no casing layer. I guess I shouldn't have done that because I'm not a bodhisatta

My grain spawn is as white and fluffy as a bunny's tail.

If there are contamination, I can't tell.
