Have I been growing mycelium or cobweb mold?
    #26847176 - 07/27/20 05:13 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hi all, first time grower here (if I can even call myself that yet, currently only on step one of just trying to get healthy mycelium).

I've been doing lots of research into the growing process over the past few months, and ultimately decided to just jump straight in and get myself started off doing things right - with agar.

Being a first timer and all, I haven't had much success growing anything besides bacteria. However, I've been slowly narrowing down my technique and on my 15th petri dish attempt, got visible mycelium growth only 2 days after inoculation with a MS syringe! Around day 4, an easily recognizable mold colony appeared so I made two A2A transfers with the little mycelial growth I had. I then re-sealed the original dish and continued to grow it out in order to see what happens and gain more experience.

The original petri dish has continued to explode with growth, however, I'm no longer sure if the "mycelium" I've been growing and transferring is actually mycelium, or if it's a cobweb mold.

Ignore the red scribbles on the pictures; I just had to remove some revealing info.

Original petri dish, currently on day 6:

(Notice the mold colony at 10 o'clock that I transferred away from. Mmycelial growth further away from the mold had not appeared yet, hence why I took transfers from that close to the mold colony).

The master dish has also developed little "knots" along the path I dragged with my paper clip incoluation loop, better seen in this picture (middle of plate):

And here's a picture of one of the A2A transfers I did, currently on day 3:

I've browsed countless "contamination picture" threads, but am still struggling to make a decision. It doesn't help that all the "healthy growth" examples they use are mostly rhizomorphic growth examples, instead of shitty (but normal) initial growth from a MS syringe.

I'm in need of some more experienced eyes - could you guys weigh in? Have I been growing cobweb mold, or is this typical mycelium from a MS syringe?

I'm in that same boat in terms of inexperienced eyes. I'm trashing everything that looks like that and pursuing clear rhizomorphs as my answer to this question.

I assume you're trying to grow cubes?

Cobweb mold grows super fast, it would over grow a plate in about 8 hours. That plate does look disorganized, like mold was meshed in a riding along.

Would you recommend continuing to transfer it until I get isolated organized growth, or should I toss it and just start over?

Yeah I would probably start over myself.
