Would glycerin ruin a disinfectant?
    #26846085 - 07/26/20 12:56 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Given that 70% iso is difficult to find these days, I've been seeking out alternatives. Turns out, the place where I work has tons of these large jugs for refilling "unscented hand sanitizer". It claims to have an 80% alcohol concentration, but the inactive ingredients listed are: glycerin (questionable), along with hydrogen peroxide and water (both of which I assume are okay?)

The solution is definitely thin enough to be used with a spray bottle, it's basically as thin as pure iso. Would the glycerin cause any problems if I used this as a general disinfectant, the way we're supposed to use iso?

Is iso still hard to find? I'd get a bottle of everclear or similarly strong liquor and dilute it before using hand sanitizer, just because I hate sanitizer lol...it leaves a little film. The stuff will still sanitize though.

Walmart.com has pretty consistently had 2x32oz bottles in stock for under $4. https://www.walmart.com/ip/2-Pack-Equate-70-Isopropyl-Alcohol-32-Oz/706238851

The glycerin is so it feels nice on your hands. It might leave a residue on hard surfaces, though. I'd use ethanol (everclear, dilute to 70%) before I used hand sanitizer as a surface disinfectant.

It is indeed still really hard to find where I am. I've called around to most major supermarkets and drug stores around me and all of them claim that their suppliers haven't been able to send them any/enough iso.

Thanks ItsaMeShroomio, I'll go ahead and order those.

In the meantime I've got this big ass jug of hand sanitizer that is too thin to actually be used as hand sanitizer so I would still like to know if the glycerin will catch any stray contams or something if I use it to spray stuff down.

As long as the residue doesn't increase risk of contamination I'd still be okay with using it for now. The residue isn't sticky or anything is it? I guess I could test it... It doesn't seem as though there's much in the mixture because it just feels like rubbing straight iso on my hands, it smells like the mixture is mostly alcohol and peroxide.

The residue is slick and does not evaporate. I don't know if it will cause contaminate issues, but I doubt it. It is caloric so it could theoretically support growth if you don't clean up the residue (no idea if any common contams can digest it though)
