Mane of the Lion - My First Gourmet
    #26845034 - 07/25/20 06:32 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

I was having a hard time finding a print of LM from a reputable source, so I just ordered a small grow bag that came pre-colonized. Figured I’d be able to get something onto agar from it, at the very least. I also followed their instructions to see what growing is like before I ramp up to bigger bags. Here’s progress after 1 week of FAE:

Look okay? Not sure if it’s clear, but I’ve got an X in the face of the bag, roughly 3” diagonal slices. Instructions were to do that and then soak it face down in water overnight. They also provided a “humidity tent” which was a plastic bag with 1/4” holes. I opted to use an empty monotub set up for cubes instead. I mist and fan at least twice daily, keeping humidity over 90%.

Any advice or comments are welcome and appreciated.

Looks good as far as I can see, although I'm not sure why it wouldn't be fruiting after a week, it really should start almost immediately after colonized.  But it may be, I just can't see.

It's too hard to see from the pic but it looks like there's a lot of airspace in that bag, just keep an eye on that to see if fruits are filling it up, you may have to help the fruit find it's way out.

Thanks Fo. I think there was a fruit starting to form on one of the sides. Was a small, hard-ish mass. I did my best to get the bag more tightly wrapped around, get the air to a minimum. Will see how it goes.

Plus look for a good culture, easier to find and get good fruits from. Prints are only used for illegal species, or for making new cultures.

Also don't mist the lionsmane directly. Rather have a bit dryer air then wet fruit with lionsmane.

I just can't get my mane into T2 petri dishes. I know they're thin, but it seems that it's not growing at all. First plate is 2 months old and it's super white, so you can see mycelium. Maybe is slower?

Oh I didn’t know that about cultures. Thanks for the knowledge.

I do not mist it directly, just a bit around the walls of the tub to keep humidity up.

3 days later...

I think that’s healthy growth forming where the bag is open, but it’s my first rodeo so I wouldn’t be shocked if I’m wrong about that.

Normal for it to be coral looking at this point? I know the “teeth” don’t form well without good FAE, but I m not sure if I should be looking for them just yet.

No the teeth won't grow till it's mature, that's just a pin - coral look usually means it isn't getting enough airflow.

Just looked back, so you're still growing this inside a monotub?

Looks like it needs more air!

I am, yeah. I thought it needs the humidity above 90%, and without the tub it drops way below that. Am I way off?

Eh, it does need humidity, but it needs air too.  Monotub isn't enough air for most edible species.

You could try taking the stuffing out of the holes, but I don't know if that will be enough.  It might though.

Depending on climate, you might be able to get away with open air fruiting too, so that's the other option.

It doesn’t have any poly or tape on the holes. I flipped the lid for now to get some more FAE and I’ll post another pic in a couple days, see if that’s enough. The humidity is around 40% now (70% right after misting the walls, then drops over a few hours), hopefully that’s not too low to cause problems.

Oh, and I’m in Virginia, USA. A/C keeps indoor temperature between 70-75 but cuts humidity a bit. Outdoor temperature is usually too high to even consider this time of year.

I dunno, I've left lion's mane blocks outside in the shade in the heat of summer here (90's) and found some pretty decent fruits.

But yeah see how it goes the way you got it for a bit it may be fine!

Oh wow. It may be good for me to have them outdoors then. Humidity is definitely higher (usually 70-80% I believe). Perhaps on days where it’s in the 80s at least.

EDIT: I took a small shaving and put it to agar a few days ago. Hopefully I’ll have a bunch of bags ready soon and I can try a few different methods and locations, see what works best for me.

Hey man, looks good. If you plan on using an old monotub for gourmets you should consider cutting a hole in the lid and putting a usb fan on the top to keep that fresh air flowing. For 20$ (and I really do mean 20$) you can get a great usb fan for computers AND a power outlet timer. 10$ each roughly. I can send you the link to each one I use if youre interested. Its super easy to setup and keeps the airflow going for gourmets so you dont have to fan 6x a day. Dont even need a drill just a screwdriver and a knife. Ive got an auto mister too but that was 70$. You can still get a good mane grow misting yourself but youve gotta get more air in there. I made the same mistake with goldens 🙂✌️

Build yourself a Martha from a cheap green plastic greenhouse at Home Depot or something. Set up a pond fogger or any kind of humidifier you can get your hands on, you can fruit a number of blocks properly in there and leave the plastic tote for cubes.
