ID Request
    #26843770 - 07/24/20 11:13 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Habitat:
Where does it grow? Edge of the road in short, sandy grass, next to a golf course on one side and a road on the other side. Lots of ponds, Florida is wildlife, no cows but a pasture a 5-10 min walk. No tree cover but treed area within 50 yards. It’s SW FL it’s hot, humid and rains every afternoon this time of year. It just poured two hours ago.

Gills:
Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc. I’m a bit colorblind and doing a spore sample now. Two partial spore samples attached one from paper the other from sitting on my sink for a bit.

Stem:
Various sizes, hollow and very fibrous like soft celery

Cap:
Open and large approx 5”, closed look like someone closed a bell umbrella 2/3 way

Spore print color:
Been on paper for 30 mins

Bruising:
I’m pretty colorblind but they look darker than purple

Other information:
Smells like otter shrooms. Pics here -

looks like Chlorophyllum. proabably toxic. commonly mistaken for Psilocybe cubensis. check those pastures and you will find cubes and/or Panaeolus cyanescens.

I would say a Chlorophyllum species. It could be a Macrolepiota, i cant really say though. Hang around and someone more experienced should chime in.

I simply went by Macrolepiota having white spores and Chlorophylum having green. These look blackish to me but closer to green than white.

Curious what lead others to reach the conclusion Chlorophylum?

I see what you mean. In history these species, and several others close to them, have been placed in Lepiota, Macrolepiota and now finally in Chlorophylum. The white spores of Chlorophylum rhacodes, brunneum and others, further complicate the matter in distinguishing the genuses Chlorophylum and Macrolepiota. The genuses are created on the basis of genetics and of macroscopic features, which unfortunately in this case, the macroscopic similarities overlap between species of different genera.

Here’s the spore print this morning. Can you let me know what you mean by "white spores" and "green spores"? Like I said I'm pretty color blind but these look black to me and while i've mixed up dark green for black in a crayon box it's definitely not white unless I'm looking at the gills? I'm not questioning your ID. I looked it up and it looks like a dead ringer (no pun intended) but I'd like to educate myself and I'm not understanding how this could be seen as white or green. Thanks in advance.

Mushroom hunting is kinda dangerous hobby if you are really colorblind :\

About the educating part, you can just google "Chlorophyllum molybdites" for spore prints and compare the description and the images. (Keep in mind that different camera lighting = different result).

Undoubtedly dangerous. More like a curiosity of convenience from someone that remembers how good it can be than a hobby though so I’ll definitely use this group if/when I find more. It’s been raining all afternoon but I drove by the pasture earlier and there aren’t any cows. I’m not sure how long they’ve been gone. They seem to come and go for long stretches intermittently so not sure if I should go look but I probably will later or tomorrow.

Thanks for the help and sorry if I didn’t quote others on replies. This board is a little different than other MB’s. I’ve frequented so it wasn’t intentional.

Most species of Chlorophyllum have white spores, but you don't need to look at spore color to identify these, the scales on the caps of Macrolepiota and the white spored Chlorophyllum break up differently, except for Chlorophyllum hortense, which is smaller.
