massively overgrown shrooms - still good?
    #2684470 - 05/16/04 12:55 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

My foaf had to go away from home for a few days this week. When he left his casing had a couple of growing mushrooms, not big enough to pick yet. He thought the casings in question were about exhausted anyway so just left them alone.

Anyway, he got back tonight to discover half a dozen giant mushrooms coming from these, caps actually cupped upwards and everything coated dark with spores. These are Creepers, but they'd be big even for B+. There's no apparent mold present, and the shrooms themselves seem firm and supple to the touch (albeit with mycelium growing all over the stems). So, he's pretty sure they're not rotten/contamed. Are these safe to eat? Should he figure dosages with them as usual?

They should still be good. Isn't mycelium on the stems just a sign of too high humidity? Their potency should be less per gram than smaller shrooms.

That would be expected, since he wasn't around to fan them. Anyway they grew on straight millet, so even at a somewhat reduced potency they should still be pretty good, hopefully.

Sounds like they'd be fine to me but I'm no expert on cultured shrooms... personally I'd dry them out rather than eat them 'fresh' though... for a start they will taste better, and it will be a good way to reduce the bulk! Fresh, they will probably be a bit weaker than usual for weight, due to being more hydrated... If you're worried about potential contams you could dry them, crush/ cut them up and make a tea as an extra safeguard... that should knock off/ inactivate just about any nasty contams, and if you don't actually boil the shrooms (add them to water that has just come off the boil, soak for 15 minutes or so with a strong tea bag, there's other similar 'recipes' available on this site), potency loss should be minimal...

PS. does 'foaf' stand for 'friend of a friend', or is it some kinda cutesy nick-name for your squeeze ?!? Never heard that acronym before !!!
