I get some post-partum stuff too and as a male I think that it gets brushed off and not taken as seriously as a woman most times. Raising kids is super hard and draining in an emotional way. First thing I would do is to do all her chores, and more, for her to take some of the stress and pressure off her. Then ask her what's bugging her. If it's kid stuff then she might just need a break. Can you watch the kids for a week or two and let her go on a road trip to find herself and find some peace and quiet for a bit. That will be good to give you guys a break too. Couples need time away from each other sometimes.

I of course don't know you and I know even less of her so I'm just guessing here. Best thing to do is to talk about it when everyone is in a calm mood. Listen and try to help if that is what she wants.

Good Luck!!!

In other news I have been arguing with the power company. They are telling me that my work is not safe according to their engineers, but I have this same argument with them multiple times a year and always win. They know I'm right, but don't want to admit it until they can't argue anymore. It's sad that I know their code better than their engineers. I guess that is why they always have so many fires and explosions all the time. It's literally what they are known for.

I don't disagree with you at all but it shouldn't be called post partum depression. PPD is in large part a hormones based thing.

And often associated with birthing trauma.

Itself severely under studied and under reported.
There's psychologists debating right now if what is thought to be PPD is actually more often a form of PTSD.

Raising a kid can cause understandable depression but I would hate for that to further muddle a poorly understood disorder.

ETA: great advice tho :manofapproval:

I get it. Kind of like how everybody says they are OCD when they aren't and then it makes people with real OCD seem like their disorder is nothing out of the ordinary. I was basically just summing up where/when my depression came from. I wonder if guys hormones change after they have a kid though? I know it's nothing like a woman would go through, but maybe there is some kind of hormonal change that is triggered in guys and maybe it could be a form of PPD too. The whole thing was stressful too so you might be onto something that it could be partly PSTD too.

I did go to the beach earlier and watched the sunset over the Pacific. It was nice, but it wasn't a spectacular sunset or anything because of the fog. The bonfire was nice and then we played some frisbee with this light-up LED frisbee I have. The cops turned on the "ugly lights" right after it got dark so the fun didn't last too long. Here are a couple pics.

Did a bit of kayaking yesterday with my kid. My dad has a pretty good inflatable one that he brought out for us. There is a bay near here with really calm water.

I think I finally got to the bottom of this keyboard problem with this refurbished Thinkpad I got. I knew it had to do with the ribbon cable, but just reseating it only fixed the problem temporarily. Ended up taking out the extra internal battery, which seemed to be putting a bit of strain on the ribbon cable right next to it, and the problem has not come back. Better to have reduced battery life than always be frustrated by the keyboard not working.

Went for a morning paddle before anyone woke up. Was a beautiful sunrise with the thick layer of mist burning off the lake soon there after. Soon people will be showing up with jet skis and ski boats. I'll happily sit on my dock and cheer them on as I enjoy an IPA or two. Hope you all have a great day.

That sounds so lovely guys
Definitely miss paddling in the ocean at the cottage early in the morning.

Would do it here but I don't have a wetsuit and would not want to fall in the water in the bay here.

Trying to cure this hangover and find my resolve to get on with my work day.

I hope everyone's doing okay so far this morning

There was a big water leak out front at the water meter. Luckily it was the neighbor's
house, not mine. We share a meter pit.

Yeah that's a general pet peeve of mine. I wish people had more experience with people with serious mental illness (or maybe just different types of people in general.) Then maybe they wouldn't throw out bipolar and narcissist and OCD as if those are definite by traits everyone has to some degree.

Though I think we have the field of medicine to blame for watering down the disorders by attempting to claim that every case of depression is a chemical imbalance.

Ya know... sometimes people just get sad. Sometimes people get sad without fully understanding why they're sad even though a good therapist will help them understand the reason.

With a child... it's a very understandable natural normal depression. There is so much going on. Your life completely changed. You are no longer an agent of yourself but instead have to devote your daily life to caring for this tiny loud obnoxious adorable ball of fragile potential.

And our society puts WAY too much pressure on parents to be perfect when our society is just not structured for it. Maternal leave is not enough in most cases and there is not paternal leave. The necessary adjustment period is needlessly interrupted by all kinds of stupid shit that will still be there after you settle into your new life with a child.

Anyway... technically all our emotions are a result of hormones. Or chemicals at least. You have a thing that makes you sad. Your hormones respond to that saddness. So a hormonal/chemical imbalance should be the reverse of that, a depression hormone marker when you are not depressed.

So yeah there's absolutely a hormonal factor in any depression.

My experience with anxiety/PTSD was a very through lesson in how that works. Some subconscious psychological brain body level thinks I am in danger even though my conscious level awareness knows I'm not in danger. But my body produces cortisol which raises my stress level which raises my conscious anxiety which makes me feel like I'm in danger.

And that feeds the chemical changes and then before you know it I'm having a panic attack and think I might actually die.

But the nice thing in that is even you do have a clinical disorder our thoughts and actions affect all that chemical hormonal stuff.

The number one hormone implicated in bonding with a child is oxytocin (not oxycotin... unfortunately) it's mostly a feel good chemical. Ideally when the mother first touches her newborn oxytocin floods her system with good feels and the brain learns that. This is a thing that makes me feel good. This is a thing I am inextricably bonded to.
Just as the brain learns anxiety triggers it learns feel good triggers.

When PPD was first being studied with this hormone it was thought that something went wrong in that initial bonding hormone. Obviously it's more complex than that but I do think it plays a part.

Men produce that chemical as well. And I think men are more likely to be socially tuned to out think that hormone. :ohwell:

Taking care of yourself is fucking hard. Especially when you have to take care of others. But when you do that the chemicals in your body reward you. You are a delicate ecosystem. If you nurture it it will not only be hardier and more self sufficient but also it will provide you with what you need.

And of course by that I mean drugs. Injected directly into your brain.
:cookiemonster:

I'm sure as people actually care about studying it we will learn alot about how people, men and women both, change on a biologically level in response to having a child. There's no doubt that we do. But that field of study is really in its infancy. ...pun not intended.

All you can do in the meantime is apply basic self healing principals.

Looks lovely btw.

I've looked at hotels by beaches and lakes and holy fuck everything's booked up until October.

I'm so boggled. Did people really take staying home for 3 months that poorly? Or do people normally vacation this much and it's just being condensed into the end of summer? Or are all these people unemployed and simply have the time to crowd the parks and beaches?

Well to their credit they are trying to be somewhat distant but every slot within 6 feet is occupied.

I've been thinking about visiting the drive in theater but they're selling out almost every night. Definitely when they're not playing a bad movie. Might go anyway and just borrow someone's truck so I can get there early and not be cooped up in my car for 5 hours.
