The shaft is wood (oak here) so the heat transfer shouldn’t be an issue.

It’d be cool if you could attach a loop to the back of the blade and then cut a slot in the handle and put it on a swivel type thing.
So you could spin the blade up into the handle and the loop would come out and lock in place.
Then with the punch on the back you’d have a perfect three in one cult tool.

An engineer that solicits and listens to advice? How odd.

After I use my scalpel I like going directly to the flame and then letting It cool down. But I don't like laying It down In my work area.
I had this old magnet that's been laying around so I decided to see If I could put It to good use.
It works so good as a scalpel holder while the scalpel is hot.
I used double sided tape and two screws and washers.
It's not pretty but practical for me...
The blade Is two inches from the filter as It cradles in the holder.
If you notice I wrap my blade to the scalpel handle with a small electrical wire strand. Sometimes my blade gets warped from the flame and wants to fall off.

As someone with two best friends that are engineers, I'm flabbergasted as well
I learned to weld a long time ago from a couple ag classes in high school. Then took some welding classes after I graduated college cause i loved it and it's really useful. I cant lay a pretty bead like an experienced welder, but it works lol.
If you really wanna learn the basics Phrontist look around at local community colleges. I fuckin loved the classes. Pretty cheap too considering how much I've used it over time.

Yeah I took beginner classes at an adult trade school type place.
It’s fun but my place was really unorganized, it was more like a place to go borrow tools. I had to go find the teacher and ask him what I was supposed to be doing. I moved before I got past heating the two plates til they started melting and then tapping a little metal rod along the joint though. I just remember him saying hold it like a drumstick and just tap and move lol.
Definitely a useful skill to learn, ill go back eventually.

So here’s where I’m at with the whole “multi-tool” research, if anyone actually cares. Let me preface by saying that I’m of the mind that it’s better to modify something that already exists and does part of the job well than it is to start from scratch fabrication. That said...
Regarding a tool with X-Acto to inoculation loop: pretty easy for me to pull this off. There are nice blade handles that are solid aluminum below the collet section and about 5” in length. I’d just have to bore out the butt end to fit as much length of an inoculation rod as needed, and then attach the two. I don’t believe there is much heat transfer between the loop and rod during flame sterilization, so the connection could be maintained with a heavy duty epoxy. If I’m wrong about that, tapping the hole in the blade handle and outside of the inoculation rod so the two screw together is a possibility.
Regarding a tool with X-Acto to agar punch: this one might actually be pretty simple too... but I’m not positive. I found a blade handle that claims to be stainless steel, and looks to be nearly identical in form to the aluminum ones (and not a bad price at $4 before shipping). If I had to guess, I would say the shaft is hollow, which would mean that the butt end could be fully bored open and slightly sharpened to create a ~1/4” agar punch. The only complication is that you’d be pretty much directly heating your handle when you flame sterilize, and may very well be too hot to hold long enough to dip in water/agar and cool. If that’s the case, a solution might be to “paint” part of the handle with high temperature silicone that performs up to 260 C, but that stuff is pricey (~$20 for 4oz).

I like a thin blade for my scalpel. The tiny spears are my favourite. It’s nice for reaching into test tubes and the like as well.

Pasty - am I correct that there is negligible heat transfer between loop and rod during flame sterilization?

I have a little bottle of those metal loops and I stopped attaching them to the handle. They’re like two inches long and I can flame the top half red hot while holding the bottom with my fingers.

Okay thanks Aka. I was 99.9% sure that was the case (don’t think there’s enough material to maintain temperature for conduction) but it was still a lingering question.

I love the #7 scalpel handles, and 15c and 11 blades
#7 handle + bacticinerator is a great combo

I've been using this "full spear" scalpel forever, it's really nice for slants. Agar transfers too, the wedge never sticks to the blade.

It's not particularly sharp to begin with, but it works very well for agar. I haven't had any trouble cloning either.
I'm thinking about getting a bladed scalpel too
