It is quite early, yet there is action in the fields. After seeing posts on a Norwegian forum of finds the last week, I decided to head out just to check a forest tractor path I've had my luck with the last couple of years. And they were there!
Just came back in, having a beer and a few sandwiches as I post this.

Great pics. I feel like I am semilanceata hiding in the grass. Nothing like some beers and sandwiches after a hunt.

So I made it out to the same spot this evening. It was good. I more than doubled the haul from last time, it is a really good spot this year. Can't believe I've found this many and it isn't August yet, even. I'm not used to be attacked by horse flies while hunting libs.

That's awesome Anglerfish!
I'm yet to head out and check the nearby habitats. It has been pretty warm in here and not too much of rain, but everything seems to be early this year. Pholiotina cyanopus season has just kicked off in here, so that'll keep me busy for a moment.

Went to check the meadow behind my house if it was a suitable habitat for Psilocybe semilanceata. I started walking on a forestry machine path and came into a conclusion - no, not a suitable habitat. I changed the lane, started heading back to my house and bumped into these.

About 50m from my house.

Hello from Latvia! Could you please post pictures with the habitat ? I've only found in them while i was living in Wales and there they were in every field where the sheep gazed, but they are not so often here in Latvia, so struggling with the habitat. Also what's the weather been like in Norway ? Here it's not below 10celisus in night, just wondering if that's a necessary factor.
Thanks a lot, and happy hunting (you've awakened my appetite )

That's amazing Anglerfish! Nice photos! I would love to see some habitat pictures from the tractor paths
I have checked some places last week without finding any. But today I scored the first 4! Also from a tractor path in a forest.

Here with some bilberries (very good season for this berry this year), raspberries, and wild strawberries (Fragaria vesca)
There's some habitat photos in this post from 2018 when I found about 100: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/25439926#25439926

Nice finds knarkkorven and nice berries aswell! Very good berry season for sure this year. I've stopped several times on my walkabouts just to eat the berries, especially the wild strawberries. I gotta go collect some bilberries aswell for the winter, nothing beats a nice bilberry pie on a cold wintery evening.

Nice to see you around, KK.
I must say I was really surprised to find so many already in July, I have been two times to the tractor path and collected around 30 grams dry, perhaps something around 700 liberty caps. They were growing in almost every tuft of grass in certain areas. The path itself is around 3-400 meters in length, partly covered in grasses and thistles, with sandy clay soil. I'll head back there next week and get some habitat shots. I could have taken a lot more pictures when I was there already, but I was constantly attacked by a variety of biting insects. And you probably know it is a bit of work picking small musrhooms out of dense tufts of grass.

Anglerfish, I read in one of the previous nordic threads that you said that in norway we can freely walk into fenced off pastures. Because of allemannsretten.
I tried looking for this on miljødirektoratet's website. The closest I found was this statement: "ikke forstyrre husdyr på beite. Lukk grinder etter deg". I guess this is implicitly stating that you're allowed in?
If we actually have this right, how can I explain this to the farmer in a nice way?

Yes, we are freely allowed to move anywhere we want in what is known as "utmark" - best translated "outer fields" - which means any areas except ones with residences. So as long as you shut the gates behind you and don't disturb animals, you're free to roam.

You will normally not have to explain anything to the farmers as long as you follow rules stated. I have only once been confronted, and that was probably because I was moving a bit too close to a horse stable. In any case, just be polite and say hello if you meet anyone. People will usually mind their own business.

Thank you for explaining!
Do I understand it correctly that if an area is defined as "innmarksbeite" (inner pasture) it cannot be lawfully traversed as it is an inner field?
I ask because I found this really nice looking cow pasture, but it is in a weird place. Surrounded by normal houses and an elderly home, but no farms nearby. I searched on gårdskart and apparently the area is defined as "fulldyrka jord" (completely cultivated soil) and "innmarksbeite" (inner pasture). So I am not really sure if I am allowed there or not. Though the gate has a sign on it that tells you to close the gate after yourself, which could be taken as a sign that it is okay to go in there.

In theory, you are not allowed to go there without permission. In practice, it depends on the situation I guess. Whatever you choose to do, just make sure you are polite and don't compromise the landowner's interest.

That is sound advice! Will keep that in mind, even if I am legally walking around on a pasture
I did some more reading about inner/outer pastures and I found that all farm land areas in Norway have to be reported and classified in the AR5 system. In this system you cannot specify outer pastures, only inner pastures. So the pasture I found may not be an inner pasture after all.
I checked the Norwegian encyclopedia and it says that outer pastures are considered as natural occurring forest or mountain pastures.
The AR5 definition of an inner pasture is that it cannot be harvested by machine and that it has enough of the correct grass plants to keep livestock fed. So both inner and outer pastures fall into this category.
I am still unsure if the pasture I found is considered natural, but I guess that's what either makes it legal to walk around on or not.
There also seems to be an interesting law on traversing inner fields. It states that if there is an established trail that leads to an outer field, you can walk said trail. The pasture I found actually has a trail like this. So I guess I can at least walk into the fenced off area and walk the trail
One cool thing I found while reading is that in one of the AR5 brochures about inner pastures (PDF) they detail what seems like every single plant that may grow on such a pasture. It's a pretty cool ID book for the Norwegian pasture flora.

Went out again to the same spot yesterday, pretty rain heavy so it was a limited trip. I didn't cover the whole track, it just got too wet and annoying. But they were popping everywhere. So funny, I have probably picked up to about a 1000 already this season, and I haven't even checked any of my other spots yet. If things continue like this, it could very well be one of the best seasons so far.

It's finally starting to happen in here! It has been very warm and dry August in my whereabouts. Even Pholiotina cyanopus stopped fruiting, but yesterday I noticed them fruiting again after a few days of rain. Anyhow, about 25 libs spotted today at my backyard meadow, 100m from my house.

Results from today's hunt, went a stroll around a park, sadly no caps yet . Wrong habitat, or could it be too dry and warm? (18C today) Southwestern Baltic States.

I really hope, I find some mushrooms this year. I have much free time , but where ever I look , I just can't find any semilanceates. I have found many same habitat shrooms , but not the right ones. Are panaeolus cinctulus worth picking ?

Hi everyone. First time posting, long time reader. I've been on my first few hunts in northern Estonia and now in the south for a few days. Can you help me with some general habitat description, or is it pretty much the same across Estonia? So far I have yet to find any libs but found some rather good looking Panaeolus papilionaceus

Refer to here and previous Official Nordic/Baltic P. semilanceata threads to find excellent habitat pictures. After you find your first you will start spotting them better (similar to chanterelle hunting in my opinion).

But they were popping everywhere. So funny, I have probably picked up to about a 1000 already this season, and I haven't even checked any of my other spots yet. If things continue like this, it could very well be one of the best seasons so far.

Ahh, the satisfaction of first hunt of the year. Didn`t find too many, specially as it started pouring rain after 1 hour. But still happy to know it has begun! and season officially started
I think around 40 brave ones collected with 1 hour and some pins left to mature

Been out every day, checking various habitats and educating myself in mycology. Today I did a quick browse near a river close to home and took some samples to examine. The largest specimen also seems to have tinted green/blue where broken. Any ideas?

Nice finds, ST1R!
We're well synchronised too, I also went out at seven this morning, back to the forest path I picked from about a month or so back. We had summer temperatures for a long while in August, but come September and the temps fell and rain poured.
I think I got around the same amount as you from around 1 hour walk.

Nice photos dudes!
I was out yesterday, picked a couple of hundred, left about 600-800. Most was too small to pick. Nice to see them everywhere! I shot about 130 photos. I have uploaded some to Shroomery and some to postimg to save space because I´m running out of storage on Shroomery
Together with some other mushrooms. Hygrocybe and entoma on the first, some kind of bolete on the other (Xerocomellus chrysenteron?):

Playing with the macro lens.. also a leaf and seed stuck on libery caps:

Documentation of two slugs eating a aliberty cap. I was almost dark, so the iso was on max, but I think this is interesting. I think we see two different species as well, the black Arion ater and the spanish Arion vulgaris. I wonder if they get any effects in their nerve systems...
The first photo was taken earlier the same evening, the slug is not the same individual as on the other photos:

Nice finds you all! I've been hunting nearby every now and then, haven't really gone to check my best spots yet. I've managed to collect a couple of hundred+. Found some sterile or low spored ones today in my back yeard meadow. Quite a difference in cap color compared to a normal one.

Was out yesterday, found mostly Panaeolus Cinctulus, but found some lib's too though! Very sparse, about 10 in total over 2 whole fields I checked. The pan's were all along some straw and manure I found in the field! Waiting for solid prints to discern Cinct's from Foenisecii's.

Today was somewhat good hunt. At least i found my own spot. But now have problem making sure that the ones i choosed from the hunt are all liberty caps. All mushrooms have purple brown gills. 1/4 of all got on that paper. They smell just like dried ones. Also found 2 stropharias. Can't wait for nice rainfalls and cold nights.

Thats a bit of a mixed collection you have there liberto, try separating into distinct piles, i can see about 3 different species in there.
Definitely a few libs knocking about in there though.

Ok. The chestnut brown liberty likes are my biggest confusion. They look like libs, but are glossy brown and near gills goes same color as libs. Olive tan glossy are libs. All mush rooms had purple brown gills. I chose them cuz of the same smell as libs. Natural nutty smell.

Yep I was referring to Libertos pictures as well! Its a bit unclear from the pictures he took if they are all are inactive panaeolus sp.
Also nice to get a confirmation of what I was almost certain of! Big respect to you Angler I have always envied your big bundles of Liberty caps, I guess I just have to find the perfect spot!
As for my pics, I was really surprised to find huge mounds of manure with a lot of mushrooms on them! Luckily they were all cinct's, but only enough for one lvl 5 trip :L (Would be nice to find tonnes of them! They seem to be much more abundant than lib's where I live)
Going to venture out again and see if more has popped up nearby in the close future!

Look for Spruce. Their main symbiosis tree is spruce. We have so many amanita muscarias in Estonia , that if I would have picked everyone I have seen, I would have 100kg But not yet messing with that depressant

I used to struggle a lot finding p. semis, but I've found 7 new spots the last couple of days. Unfortunately I haven't found many shrooms on them tho, but I've managed to pick around 150 semis.
The last place I lived I had a spot where I picked around 1000 of them when I first found the spot, so this is a bit meh compared (:

Just find some nice woods to take a walk in, an old tractor-track or something, they are very dispersed throughout the entire woods.
If you do find them, be absolutely sure you prepare them correctly, as not doing so can be neurotoxic if I remember correctly. First dry them cracker dry, and maybe make a tea - keep it around 92C for 5 minutes after adding powdered cracker dry mushrooms to the water, you do not have to eat the mush in the bottom, just drink it. It actually doesn't taste that bad alone!
But yeah, get rid of that ibotenic acid before ingestion, I would recommend not going more than one large cap for your first time.
I tried it once, made me tipsy-like when drinking alcohol- personally I don't like that, but it can be enjoyable!
The amanita muscaria season may have come and gone, at least where I live in southeast norway the popped up july - august, plenty then, now I don't see as many when out walking, but that varies a lot!

Hey guys. I have been looking for mushrooms for a few years now and never once had I found one. Until yesterday. It was a nice sunny autumn day yesterday in Estonia so a buddy and I decided to make some shroom tea and go for a walk in the forest. And then randomly I stumbled upon these guys. A truly magical moment, warm autumn day tripping and just happened to find my first shrooms ever. https://i.imgur.com/LfDhDTU.jpg https://i.imgur.com/st7Td39.jpg
Edit: The images were enormous, I removed the Image tags.

Libs everywhere!!!

An extreme flush right now. It's very seldom this good. Groups every other meter. I had to stop picking when it got dark, but could have found several hundred more. I also left several hundred small ones behind, but still picked 430g wet. All I saw when I got home and closed my eyes was libs. And i got a muscle ache in my behind today from all the squats.
Some good photos (thanks Anglerfish for the space):

I know the feeling of the first find. Congrats! I haven't had any luck this year in Estonia so far but still searching. Hope to post my findings in a week or two once it gets a bit cooler. In my experience either the temps have to drop or "my spot" is known to others As someone else pointed out I saw some slugs/snails right where I expected to find libs.
Last year I found several other species there and so far have not seen a single mushroom sprout there so that seems to suggest it's still been too warm and dry.
I collected the spores of some 70 liberty caps last year and tried to spread them in another pasture where you'd typically find species that thrive in lib cap territory but so far I haven't found a single other mushroom there. Waiting for colder and wetter weather. Expert hunters from Estonia could prove me wrong with their awesome 'forest trails' but I don't have years of experience under my belt yet

also sit in on the UK and Irish threads for heads up/tips. look out for hauls like knarkkorven's in Eire/UK and get ass in gear when they fruiting

Some of the most recent finds from my backyard. Found also lots of sterile or low spored ones with white gills and more orange caps.

That's a nice haul knarkkorven!

Same here in Lithuania, was wondering whether I am extremely unlucky with the fields or it's just the weather.

I'm still finding a few libs here and there when I am out riding my bike in the forest.
This was a very unexpected place, a small turf in the open soil/gravel along the tractor tracks beside a clear cut:

I think I will go to my favorite place tomorrow.

Went out today to a cow pasture and a sheep pasture, no luck with liberty caps. Weather has been a bit more wet, but nothing amazing, about 0.5mm of rain past two days, 70 - 75 % average humidity, probably too warm as well at 15-18 C at day and 10-12 C night. Anyone having more luck than me? If so, please post your weather conditions, I'm interested to see what conditions I should be aiming for.

Nothing crazy but they still are out there, should be dipping to below 0 at night later this week though...

Are they still around? I've never found them, despite looking in (what I believe) are ideal habitats (Sweden, Stockholm area).
Never seen anything I even mistook for them out of enthusiasm.
How late do they keep growing? It's really starting to get cold now!

This week's weather looks promising (showers and no freezing nights). I have yet to find any specimen but then again I haven't really invested the proper time. I did go spot hunting but all promising areas near me turned out to be high brushes. In early october I visited an abandoned cow meadow that had all the right indicators but no dice. Good luck to all the late hunters!

Went checking my two spots yesterday. North-Estonia. One was empty (this year didn`t provide at all). From other spot I picked around 15 little ones in 1 hour and saw lots of Panaleous species growing. So they are still out there. I think if the weather holds plus degrees and some heavy rain & sunshine in coming week, I will go and visit the spot again on the weekend
P.S. Just a "shower thought" : Imagine if I would have visited the field that didn`t provide any for the first time in my life. There was not a single mushroom to be found (not even wrong ones), I would think "f*ck it, waste of time" and would never return. Even though it seems all the conditions are right, but no shrooms. But I know in fact it was my main spot last year and years before that, have picked hundreds of semis there. So for sure I will return next season. I think I have crossed out many promising fields that way. Just cause in this particular year they didn`t provide, doesn`t mean that next year they will be empty too. Have to remind myself that when encountering another perfect habitat but empty spot..
Happy huntings !

Take some fresh libertys and throw them to places which have perfect conditions. They should appear some year in those spota if you lucky enough. Some guy gave that advice. Also don't go picking every year then. Give them time.

While the season is coming to an end for some of you, it just started for me in northern germany. First significant finds for this year on a recently abandoned horse manure.

Yeah was a bit cold in Southern Finland this weekend with some light snow, but it should be warming up tomorrow. Going back out later this week, this season hasn't been the best, so i'm hoping for some late season finds..
Good luck everyone!

Is it common to still find them after the first snow? For example if the temperature gets warmer again, or it's not likely?

I guess with P. semilanceata, nature is the best cultivator. With an outdoor grow, you'd likely have to follow the season anyway, like people do with woodlover cultivation, so your fruits would probably appear at the same time as the wild ones.

If the snow is temporary and the temperatures rise a bit after the snow melts, then it's possible to find them. It's not common, though, since most times a snow fall signifies winter which normally is the end of season.

It dipped to almost freezing yesterday but I thought this weather prognosis looked promising:

I'm still searching for new areas as I couldn't find any libs this year from the spot I know of, so really I'm asking if it's worth my time. Several days of wet weather and those temps look ideal to me, especially if it will be warmer and possibly sunny. Thoughts?

That prognosis looks good, yes.
You should always be on the lookout for new spots, though. It really increases your chances of a good season if you have more available areas to hunt in, since different spots tend to give different yields each season - i.e. one that really delivered last year, might appear dead the next, and vice versa.

This year was pretty great year. Overall about 500 libs. But I did not find any good pastures where libertys grow. No luck this year. 1 person gave me a good place to look, but its known place, but still managed to get 300+- from there. So thanks for him. I hope next year I have more money to travel around

Best way for you to find out is to get out and look. Don't spend your time here while someone else might be out there picking your mushrooms!
Seriously though, just follow the forecast and if the temps are somewhere reasonably above zero degrees, the humidity above 75 - 80 %, and the pressure somewhere between 990 and 1015 hPa - you're good to go.
This time of year it usually takes a bit more work to find sufficient amounts, though.

How do you look for new fields? Do you find a good place and go thoroughly through it or do you try to go over more places and at faster pace?

Depends on the field. If the vegetation is right and other conditions (it has been raining etc.), then I look more closely and spend some time. Also if you find indicator mushrooms on the field (panaeolus species for example) then it surely needs closer inspection Or in fact any kind of mushrooms is sometimes a good sign already. With time you will develop the right gut feeling

I will use google satellite view to find areas likely to harbour liberty caps, or I'll take note of potential spots when out walking.
I usually walk at a moderate pace and look for any kind of mushroom growth, then if I find anything at all, I'll start combing through the area more closely.
One thing I've discovered over the years is that even though I got regular spots to which I return season after season - and this goes for all species I'm hunting, also edibles - is that very often the best finds are surprises in new and unknown fields or forests. Like the late great composer and mycophile John Cage said - hunting mushrooms is about chance encounters.

I must had been extremely unlucky. I do pretty much the same things, however I did not find anything in Lithuania even though I tried looking in perfect spots and different parts of country. I had found some lib caps last year in UK so it's not like I am incapable of identifying them.

Look for clay soil in some maps. The field that my buddy said has some, in maps shows clay soil.

I went hunting today, North Estonia. Found 120+ mostly smaller libs over the course of about 3 hours. By the time it was getting dark, frost started to appear on the ground and some of the mushrooms even began to freeze, so I think the season is ending here. Luckily I found a new field and managed to have a successful hunt this year, so I'm really glad about that. I learned a bit more about the habitat too, and I guess my 'technique' for spotting the mushrooms themselves developed a bit.

If it wasn't getting dark by 4-5pm I would search the field a bit longer and possibly find 2x as much, but I didn't have a headlamp with me and don't have the time to return tomorrow. Later this week looks to be too cold already.

For those who are having difficulty finding new areas where libs grow - I was used to finding liberty caps in taller grass tufts like this first photo

For instance in overgrown grass that looks like this:

This year I finally had some luck with a new field that was mostly short grass, a variety of moss, some other very small plants and many other mushrooms. When looking for a new area, I would normally scout to see if there are any mushrooms at all - if I can find other mushrooms sprouting I continue to look for libs. If it is completely bare, I move on to search for a new area. From my experience when other mushrooms are also sprouting then libs are also very plentiful.
Libs that grow in shorter grass/open field seem to be considerably smaller when compared to those growing in "deschampsia cespitosa" and similar grasses. Mushrooms in open grass also don't seem to grow in bunches, but are near one another.

However 'taller' specimens can still be found:

Next season I will look for cleared pathways near forests, for example where forests are cleared for power lines and are overtaken by grasses. Looks like nearby woods that help keep the moisture up and prevent wind from drying the area helps the mushrooms to fruit. Open fields with too much wind like we have on the north coast of Estonia generally are dry, so search near treelines or 'protected' areas. Good luck to those who are still searching but I am done for this year. Happy with what I learned and found

Seems like you found my spot . Cool, but keep it secret. Too many people know it already. And if on next year you see cars full of people coming there when you are there. Leave , they might take away yo stash
