Agar Cased in Coir.

Why? Because why not.So last night I was spending time with mycology, and I looked a three agar plates (2nd transfers) I made about 3 weeks ago in some to-go ramekins. They were overgrown and something I simply did not want to try and transfer again. But they did look clean to the naked eye so I didn't really want to toss them and completely waste the mycelium. I decided to let science waste them and maybe learn a thing or two. In my mind I thought, what do mushrooms need to grow? Light, water, nutrients, and some oxygen. So I thought once again, could I simply case those agar cups with coir and they fruit? My first thought was to boil a small amount of grains, and use the grain water to hydrate my coir, but I second guessed that may add too much room for bacteria or mold to take over. I wasn't putting everything I had into making a perfectly clean grow for the 1 gram that might actually grow, but I could still do my part to keep down any excess room for contamination. So I decided to case it with plain old coir and water and let the agar be the only source of nutrients. I did just that, I think it would be awesome for just one single shroom to grow. Or possible a small cluster of 3. The perfect desk decor if you will. Today I logged on here and searched to see if someone else had tried something like this before. Which I was certain they had, I wasn't the only person to think of this surely. I did find someone who tried it and made a thread about it. His coir casing colonized, but he said it never started pinning. That is the only indepth thread I found on the subject and it was something like 8 years ago. So I'm going to try it fresh again. The cups, the legends. I used to-go ramekins and I believe the FAE will be fine with the lids clicked in place. The coir, the.. casing. The morning after. I will update the original post as the journey continues.

Cool stuff, I understand you are just doing it for the fun. Because agar without coir will also pin by itself given enough time. I also wanted to do this in the beginning when I started with agar haha. A couple questions OP, does your agar look clean to you? Also, did you pasteurize the coir or just threw it in there?

The bottom cup in the row of three looked questionable to me, it had a hazy film over it. And yes, I put coir in an empty jar that had just been pressure cooked with a round of Agar as a support to keep my agar bottle from falling over. I added the boiling water to the jar with the coir, wrapped it in a thick towel and shook the devil out of it. After it cooled to room temp in the towel, about 2 hours, I used it on the agar, it was a bit under field capacity so I spritzed the top with my h2o.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this somewhere. IIRC it grew a bunch of small mush. Might get enough for a couple doses.

I did this a few times. Basically grew a bunch of sturdy agar pins.
I was hoping for normal fruits growing off a thin ass plate but no dice

It's been a while since I updates this. For one main reason, nothing.fucking.happened. There was no growth whatsoever. I set the cups on a shelf and forgot about them after about two weeks. Well I was straightening up today and noticed them, figured I would throw them out. Until I noticed this.

We have some growth, and possible knotting. I cut (2) 1/2 inch slits in each cup for a bit more FAE and set them back on the shelf. We'll see what happens I suppose.

And so we have a pin. In one cup, the others are still showing minimum signs of life but nothing picture worthy at this moment.

I've often thought about casing agar plates just to get spore prints, as sometimes I want to expand or update the prints in my library. Some are getting old but I don't wanna do a full grow for just 1-2 prints to keep the library viable. this seems ideal.

I personally don't think a fruit large enough to print will grow from this. My expectation is a few shrooms 1 to 2 inches with 1/2 inch caps at most. I don't think much more than your average agar pin will sprout.

I bet this rw could make a few syringes if I were to print him

Even with tiny caps they still drop(eject) countless spores.

This makes me want to try to make a small batch of nute rich agar and throw a few cultures on that shit just to try this. Seems like it could be a foolproof way to keep your library up like munchauzen said. Maybe nute rich would help get better results/maybe a few slightly larger fruits. Not like it would make big bois im sure but maybe get a slight bit bigger. Still cool anyway to play with.

This particular mix was 8 grams MEA, 10 grams agar powder, and 500 ML of water. I also thought that it might work well if you made it with less agar powder and more nutes. That way you would have a nutrient rich agar that you could mix up with the coir. Possible use grain soak water instead of tap along with the regular amount of MEA and 5 grams agar to keep it semi sloppy.

Do you make them the same way as pastyplates?

No I pressure cook the agar then pour them in a sab. There a tek on here somewhere that someone does them like past plates but you have to replace the lid on each cup after pressure cooking them.

The finished result. Not sure if this is enough for a spore print. I wouldn't think so.

Maybe the second flush will be more promising.
