Shoebox help
    #26842589 - 07/24/20 12:13 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

I have three shoeboxes that I made from shredded brf cakes. Each box has 3 1/2 pint cakes shredded + 1 quart coir.

I mixed them and tried to level (probably did a poor job) and then left the lids snapped shut until i saw pins. After that, I unlocked the lids. I did mist them twice over the course of the first 4 or 5 days, though.

So the mushrooms on the top are growing slow and sparse. The sides and bottoms are going gangbusters, though. From what i have read perhaps the top is dry and the bottom is where there are better growing conditions.

I am looking for information on

1. What do do now to "fix" this. Should I consider harvesting the small amounts on top and flipping my sub upside down?

2. What did I screw up and how should I avoid the same mistake in the future.

Pictures attached (top side and then bottom)

May be wrong but I think side and bottom pinning are due to improper surface conditions. Work on that. there are plenty of threads regarding proper surface conditions

A lot of times people black out the bottom portion of their monotubs and shoeboxes using either a black trash bag or black spray paint so that pinning won't be triggered on the bottom and sides.

I have found some things that help me try to avoid this the next time, but still falling short on finding advice on what to do with this tub now to try to salvage it. Any ideas?

I like using a liner for shoeboxes. Itll help eliminate side/bottom pinning, especially as the sub shrinks.

I may go liner the next time.

Anyone with any ideas about what I should do in the meantime with these shoeboxes?

Ive seen people here flip the sub and fruit off the bottom pins.

You can also leave as is and harvest the bottom once they are finished. The fruits will be be deformed, but fine to eat.

My main gripe with side/bottom pins that grow is trying to spot when the veil breaks for harvest.

I ended up harvesting a huge fruit at the bottom of one of my other tubs. I guess for now I am just going to harvest all sides as they mature. I may also cut a few wedges from 2x4s and prop up one of them so the bottom can grow out looking better, but not sure about that yet.
