Hi all, Im in the middle of my first grow of GT in a shoebox with coco coir and no casing layer. Its taking a long time, they are in there now for nearly 3 weeks but Im patient. There is still growth of mycelium but very slow. It seems that knots are forming now but small and slow.
The interesting thing is that i had 8 jars with a verm, brown rice flour mix.
5 jars colonized very quickly, one not at all and 2 very slow.
The 2 were probably less than half filled with mycelium when the 5 were full and pulling away from the walls.
I decided i couldnt wait for the two slow ones as I didnt want to stall the natural speed of the 5 fully cultivated jars.
So i took the 5 and mixed them with the bulk substrate and into the mono tub/shoebox. (clear tub in the pics)
Meanwhile I took the 2 slow jars out of my incubator and put them on top of a cupboard (maybe 60-70F)
After a couple of days i put them back in the incubator(80F) as I realised I had room in there beside my monotub and within a week 1 jar fully colonised and the other fully colonised and started fruiting vigorously inside the jar.
So I took them out and have created a smaller shoe box (white one) with those two and the growth of mycelium is currently vigorous, more so than the first box.
As I said Im a first timer and Im reading a lot about all the different opinions on how to do this. Everything I did is super clean, there is no contamination, the water amt in both is the same and i would say its perfect field capacity,
I will be patient and leave it for another week or so.But its interesting that the main box is slower. Conditions are the same in both boxes. Kind of mad that the fast colonizers are now the slowest.
The only difference may be that the ratio of coco coir to spawn is higher in the first box. Maybe I added a bit more coir than I should.
Im now thinking if there is no movement in box 1 in another week I will take it out and leave it on the top of cupboard in slightly cooler conditions for a couple of nights and see if that stimulates growth. Perhaps that is what stimulated the fruiting in the jar.
Its kind of cool that Im getting to observe two boxes now rather than one as it should have been.
Im learning anyway ; )
(well after posting that I went and checked on them and I have pins wahaaaay ; ) , Exciting!
The clear box is the first one and they were put in that box 18 days ago (it seems the pins are mostly on the side that is getting more light. Im thinking Ill give them stronger light all around?)
And the white box is the second one and they went in there 7 days ago, the mycelium looks really different for some reason, I wonder should I case that white one?)
Sorry if all of this is a bit jumbled I seem to get worse at writing the older i get ; )
