Second grow: PF Classic & Monotub
    #26842472 - 07/24/20 11:08 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hey everyone,

So my first grow seems to be going well (touch wood) https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=26833828&page=0&vc=1#26833828

I thought I'd document my second grow using PF Classic and all the same ingredients from the first supplier, but using their supplied monotub:

2020-06-14: Inoculated 2 premium 5 grain spawn bags with PF Classic spores, about 3.5cc in each.

Bags placed in a cupboard and left.

2020-07-10: Mid colonised.

Both bags about 60/70% colonised. I mixed up one of the bags as a test to see which colonised faster. The instructions say you don't need to break up the bags for the premium bags, but I figured I'd try and see what happened.

2020-07-13: Mixed bag almost colonised.

Note that the unmixed bag is whiter but less colonised. I decided to mix that bag up too and see what happened.

2020-07-15: Fully colonised.

Though they're not as white as the unmixed bag, they both colonised super
quickly and I moved to the tub at this stage.

2020-07-15: Setup monotub.

I used 10lb of substrate and 2 of the 3lb bags above. My process was as follows:

Place plastic trash liner on the floor below the tub, fold it until it protrudes about 6 inches each side, tape the bag so it doesn't move around. Flip the bag over and place in tub, secure with tape to the sides in a few places, measures about 6 inches deep.

Placed about 1 inch of substrate in the bottom of the tub, about 1/4 of one of the 5lb bags. Broke up and dumped one of the spawn bags into the remaining 3/4 of the bulk substrate bag, and shook/mixed it all together. Dumped this bag into the tub and gently levelled out.

Took the next substrate bag and emptied out 1/4 of it into the previous bag, then mixed in the other spawn bag in with the 3/4 of substrate as I did with the previous bag and again dumped into the tub and levelled out.

Lastly I took the remaining 1/4 and added a top layer to the tub to cover any showing grains.

The holes of the tub stuffed medium tight with polyfill and sides of the tub misted. Lid sealed and placed in a dark cupboard.

Pretty much left the tub in the cupboard for 9 days until the surface looked fully colonised.

2020-07-24: Fruiting.

Tub is now placed on a north windowsill with indirect sunlight, I halved the polyfill in the holes so it's quite loose.

Will report updates with dates/pictures as they come.

If I have done anything wrong/need to chance please feel free to comment.

Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ„

Well I had a pretty solid first flush that I harvested in 2 batches about 12h apart:

1st batch:

2nd batch:

I harvested the second batch a little late as you can see some opened up and dropped spores.

I ended up with 100g dry which is pretty good.

I dunked for 24 hours after this and am now playing the waiting game, seem to be doing ok with some pins forming.

I tried 3g this weekend, I was expecting them to be stronger than the B+ I grew but I found them to be much more introspective than visual. Slight tracer effect and movement when looking at the ground. Not much in the way of colors popping or great movement hallucinations but some serious introspection. I had INTENSE feelings of love at one point, trying to figure out if it was real or the shrooms, but very interesting nonetheless.

:vibin: I love the booms that do that - give you nothing but pure love. Trust your intuition. Booms has shown me love for what it is and not what people say it should be, which is a completely different version of love. Nature's version. Both "brutal" and "beautiful" and necessary.

But to touch on the grow, absolutely stellar. :headbanger: Everything looked clean from start to finish.

Thanks. I'm pretty happy with how this has turned out given it's my second grow.

It was quite the experience for sure, never experienced that before. I've been wondering if it's this type of shroom that causes that effect or if it was my state of mind. Certainly visuals were much more subdued than with the B+ I tried the weekend before.

So I've not had a 2nd flush from this tub. There are 3 shrooms that have grown by the rest of it is bare, no pins, nothing.

Anyone know how I can get this to continue to flush? It doesn't seem to be contaminated or anything.

I dunked for 24h after my first flush after reading about that on the forum and it absorbed 3lb of water.

Thanks

Hey

My box has kinda stalled and I donโ€™t know why. Iโ€™ve got a few stubby looking shrooms with word caps that have kinda folded in on themselves

Anyone know how I rectify this and get it to continue growing?

Thanks

Could be a lot of things.  Bacteria can prevent a good 2nd flush.  I'm not a big fan of the dunk because I feel it can oversaturate the sub and stunt successive flushes and promote bacterial growth.  Sometimes it defies reason.  Let it dry up a bit and give it time.  That said,  nice work.  Love seeing people running PF Classic.  Always been potent fruits that have a higher-than-average-potential for good canopies and weight, and solid fruits -from MS- when conditions are right.

Ok Iโ€™ll let it be and see how it gets on.

Made tea with 5g of the pf classics this weekend. Boy does they hit hard. Very good!

Yeah thatโ€™s exactly why I quit dunking unless I get two big flushes.

Iโ€™ve only run pf classics a couple times but they were really difficult for some reason. Took forever to pin and then grew super dense but rough looking mushrooms.

Pretty weak pinset too but it couldโ€™ve been the new tubs I used for the first time.

i love PF classics!! they were the first mushroom strain i ever cultivated. i was pretty shitty at growing when i started but i managed to get some good tubs. the fruits were always incredibly dense for me, especially when grown in the winter time. i imagine if you had a good clone you could get a killer wall to wall flush with PFs

Yeah running a good Classic clone and keeping those tubs on the drier side gives some tall, but meaty mafks.  A cube might be a cube,  but Classics are REALLY finicky about water.  A tad too wet and you've got sparse little rock hard midgets.  I could be way off the mark with TOC or PESH or Stropharia for instance and still get full sized fruits with good coverage or even a full canopy.  I'm actually going back to running them again with my RW clone and a couple prospective AA+ clones for better potency consistency. :awesomenod:

Sounds like dunking was my downfall.

I got a great first flush of 100g so I know the genetics are good.

Is there any best way to let it dry? Should I take it out of the tub and leave it by a fan or anything?

Regarding drying, my advice would be to just leave the lid off for a few hours. I'd be afraid that removing/handling it would only introduce more stress and potential contams. You don't want to blow all the crap from your room/outside your window onto the sub.

Ok

I poured out the water that was pooling at the bottom of the tub below the liner and have left the top off.

The sub does feel wet to the touch, kinda like a wet sponge, I am guessing that is not normal.

24 hours is recommended for BRF cakes. Theyโ€™re super dense and donโ€™t seem bothered by it at all but bulk sub should only be dunked for a couple hours if you dunk it at all. I make my sub pretty dry so I dunk after the first flush as long as it puts out at least 250g wet per qt. If itโ€™s much less I wonโ€™t dunk at all, otherwise 2-4 hours.

I still havenโ€™t grown PF classic though I do have my first APE in the dehydrator, a distant grandchild thatโ€™s still nice and dense.

Ah, so yeah 24h dunk is clearly not a good idea.

The sub has a good field capacity when I birthed, good few drips when squeezed but not soggy. I guess I will have to leave the lid off for a while to dry it out enough now.

So I left the top off for a few hours, and the sub kinda turned a strange orange/brown color

Any idea why and what the white spots are?

It looks like it dried out and died.

Do you have an idea what the humidity in your grow room is? And was there a fan or ac or anything running?

The temp is fine itโ€™s the air moving that does it. Especially if youโ€™ve got low humidity.

Mine is really low and when I have to run a window ac unit even shoeboxes with the lids on will dry out itโ€™s ridiculous.

I had the lid off for maybe 6 hours, I have central air with an intake thatโ€™s nearish to where the tub was. I hope itโ€™s able to recover.

itโ€™ll probably still put out some mushrooms but it looks pretty rough. the best thing you can do now is maintain good surface conditions & just let it do its thing

edit: lol somehow i didnโ€™t see AKAโ€™s comments & only saw the pic on the last page before i commented. heโ€™s totally right

just keep it moist without letting it dry out or be too wet basically. itโ€™s a bit different for everyone since everyoneโ€™s environment is a bit different
