New job/career
    #26842340 - 07/24/20 09:49 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

I'm in this situation when I lost my passion for what I been doing for living. I've been chef for 8 years now.and recently started to work as pastry chef in bakery. It's cool to have some new experience I get money but it is not the best actually it's shit.
does pay bills but totally not worth it.

All the time I worked in industry only thing that was pushing me through sweat ,blood, anger ,bullying , alcohol, drugs and sex infused
(it's was best time and worst time in my life TBH) work environment was passion for it. Love to cook and I am good at it. but at some point realized that most of people in industry are totally pricks and have no love for this job and doing it just to do it and leave home.
but what is the point then to work 50-70h a week for shit salary?
I did not cared and did my best until it did hit me. and I realized I need more than passion to live. need money.

maybe someone been in this similar situation?
have no idea what could do for living.

I do like exercise and train a lot could become PT or something but in this time it is difficult to find good courses or collage.

I was in the restaurant/bar biz for 35 years, started in fast food when I was 17. Then I moved to regular restaurants later and was a cook. I have done dish washing to management, fast food to fine dining. Everything but own a place. I have worked as a chef assistant and head waiter. I finally realized I had to go do something else at 40yo. It was while I was working at the yacht club in St. Petersburg Fla. Real estate and nursing popped up as opportunities for me. I chose nursing and am VERY glad did. 10th grade HS dropout and partied my ass off. Yet I went back to school at 42yo and passed an RN course. There's always time to change and do something different, at least before you're like 70 or something, lol.

It takes many years. I pursued a whole 'career' - got to the top of my game - and was thirty six before I realized what it was that I actually want to do with my life.

All I can say is; good luck figuring it out in this crazy world. It's really not easy.

--------------------
Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

I think of this often. In fact I am leaving my job after 7 years next week for unfortunately another in the same industry. I dont know if I want to work on cars forever. What else do I know tho? I think covid will change alot of peoples careers.

My brother has been in the restaurant business for 25 years. Doesnt make shit, but he is very good at what he does. As any job goes, its competitive and you can make good money if you are good. But you also have to find the right spot.

glad you found your thing. I need one too lol

restaurant business is good expierence IMO but after while becomes comfort zone - you always will find a job and you always will know how it works/what to do if you.
plus it takes a lot of energy and time of life while being not very rewarding.

studying on other hand is very cool! and I think it is never too late to learn new skill/craft.

Wow this sounds a  lot like my friends story except he was about 10 years younger when he realized he hated his job.  Was a chemical engineer for one of the big battery companies, energizer or the other one im totally blanking on, realized he hated it, went to night school became and RN.  He is now a board certified RN and loves his job.  He even went through the hell of covid19 in Massachusetts early on, and talked about the toll of the number of deaths he saw but was still happy about his choice to become a nurse.

I have soo much respect for nurses.. they work their asses off ridiculously hard for super long hours, that takes some willpower..

I normally love my job.. but owning a business is just non stop stress.. some days i wish i had just gotten a normal office job, just be a drone and take hope a paycheck and no work stress.
