I did this on purpose so sending a PM wouldn't cause you to lose your spot in a thread. However, if people would prefer it to open in the existing browser window it can easily be changed. Opinions?

I see that as more a convinience than a nuisance... what's wrong with that? Now instead of pressing the back button until you were at the previous screen you were looking at, you can simply close the PM window.

actually that does kinda make sense now that I think about it... I guess it just got kinda odd for a little while there cause I was talking to someone a little bit ago and I just kept accumulating more and more windows without even realizing it until there was like fifty of em open at the same time I was all like .......... I usually end up having about 20 windows open anyway so I dont mind.
I like that it takes you back to whatever you were looking at.

The pop-up attribute is an overall benefit contributing to the greater ease of browsing and reference ability.

yeah...it does make a lot more sense doing it that way
I just didn't realize it was intentional, so I figured I'd bring it to the admins' attention just in case they didn't realize that's what it was doing (cause - ya know - PMs never used to open in a new window)

I like it for this reason.
Then again a new window for me isn't much of a hassle like it may be for IE users. I use firefox with tabbrowser extensions
