New growing environment, questions for people with similar conditions
    #26841396 - 07/23/20 07:39 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Whats goin on yall, long time no see, about a half year or so now.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, especially those who have similar growing conditions to me now.  I started and successfully grew tens of pounds in a finished basement, in a somewhat "city"-like area.

I've since moved out to the country, where gnats and flies and other such mites and things abound.  I used to beleive that if you had gnats in your house, you just needed to clean your house.  Well, i've since learned thats not the easiest thing in the world to do, especially with a dog, cat, and two kids running rampant leaving doors open and such.  I'm planning on starting up the operation in an unfinished basement, with a french drain along the perimeter which holds moisture.  There is a dehumidifier setup to keep the basement at a steady 45-50 RH.  I also have moisture absorber containers scattered around the edges, which hopefully keep any water-loving critters away.

My real question is, does anyone have any advice on this kind of environment, or should I treat it just the same as before?  I'm currently running shoeboxes which I keep closed for the majority until the end when I flip the lids. I'll be getting some full size monos soon.

Thanks again to every one for the help.

I’d say roll how you normally would and dial it in as you go. Gnats are a bitch though, I wouldn’t even try with them in the house. You better get the grow space sealed off if you don’t want to see what 1000 gnats in a shoebox looks like.

Yeah thats what i'm really worried about.  I've witnessed what 1000 gnats looked like before when I had them under control.  Had to vacuum some gnats occasionally and kept everything clean, but here in the country for whatever reason is just a different story.

As far as sealing off the environment, I've heard some people growing in a grow tent, which I just recently purchased (for other purposes), however I suppose I could use this....but even that doesn't really seal everything off.

Thanks for your help Pasty, your advice holds alot of weight with me.  Even though I stick to my petri regular pours

I’d look into maybe some big mosquito nets over the doors and vents into the room, lots of fly paper near the entrances. Keep the drains in the house clean as you can, drano and boiling water into every drain in the house. I feel that man, I’m battling a few fuckers myself.

Make sure you have good air flow because they are looking for places with still air to breed. Simply setting up a fan to prevent them from flying into your fruiting chambers can make a world of difference.

Another thing you can do is completely submerge your substrates in water for several hours between flushes to drown any larvae in the substrate.

I have similar conditions. I made a dust proof room or construction clean room for house improvements. Then I run it on a possitive flow. I've had no issues with pests since. I use the magnetic door nets on the room and also on any outside doors. Then stickies for monitoring. We run closed loop gardens outside and the first few years it was almost impossible to not have gnats or similar inside. Good luck

I’ve tried drowning gnats before. It didn’t work unfortunately.

It's hard to say how effective it actually is since they're so hard to see and there are multiple species, maybe some can same survive. I have noticed with multiple trays infested with gnats though after getting rid of all the visible adults having no recurrence in the ones that were then soaked.

Changing the air flow can definitely be effective. I had a tray/tent setup sitting by a window and it was rapidly swarmed by dozens of gnats, not to mention a little spider hunting them down, and simply moving it a few feet from the wall into air flow from the AC next to my other FCs was enough to make them all spontaneously leave and not return. Fans don't just make it harder for them fly and land, they also help remove the odor and elevated co2 that attracts them.

Thanks for the input guys.  In preparation, I've been using the old vinegar sugar dishsoap in a cup deal in my kitchen, and it doesn't really work worth anything.  I've been trying to find fly paper and for some reason its as hard to find as disinfecting wipes ATM.

I'm going to try the fan deal.  I havent done a run yet here, so for all I know, gnats might not be a problem yet for my specific application.  They love flying around upstairs, however.  I'll be sure to update once the verdict is in.

I'm growing different stuff in my basement. Although i'm pretty new to this stuff, i can say, usually dehumidifier and a good fan is enough for keeping the place dry and good.

MycoMadness went over a way to potentially combat gnats using women's pantyhose (look at the end of the linked video). It won't stop them from congregating in the area but it'll keep them from making it into your monotubs.
