Just wanted to share my cubensis Pool Party I have going while I get ready to try with pans again! * 3

SPAWN PREP
For the spawn we will be using a mix of grain/dry straw/vermiculite. You can try another grain if you'd like but for this mix I like oats. For the oat prep we will not rinse/boil at all. -Put a pot of water on the stove on high heat and wait for it to come to a full rolling boil, then remove it from the heat.
-Dump in 2 dry Qt of Oats and cover
-Let soak 45 mins covered(no stirring is necessary)
For the straining part I like to use a 5gal bucket with lots of holes drilled in the bottom and bottom sides. Once your 45 min soak is up dump your oats into the bucket and immediately rinse them cold with cold water so that they don't continue cooking via the steam. Once you've gotten them cool enough that they stop steaming, shake the water out of them well for a minute or two. Then add:
-1/2qt dry mulched straw
-1/2qt dry vermiculite
Mix this all up well and let it sit for about 5min so the straw and verm can soak up any excess water. After your 5min is up you should have a nice spawn mix that looks a little on the dry side, you can go ahead and load bags/jars now. I like bags for this mix but have used jars fine as well.  Since the mix comes out on the dry side you can use more LC solution to inoculate that you normally would to spend up colonization. I like to split this mix between 2 medium spawn bags and inoculate with 1 or 2 full syringes of LC each. They should reach full colonization within 2 weeks.

SUBSTRATE
Once your spawn is fully colonized you want to get to work on lime pasteurizing a shitload of straw for your bulk sub. The addition of steam pasteurized coir/verm/manure mix is unnecessary I think because the Avery's pool produced a tiny more than the first and the sub/spawn for the averys was much less. We don't want to do more work than we have to or waste a bunch of spawn/sub. I like to make my pasteurization bath in a big 120L BRUTE trashcan.
-Fill the Trashcan 3/4 full with water from the hose
-Add 250g hydrated garden lime to the water
-Stir for 5 mins to make it a solution
-Add 15-20qt mulched straw to the bath
-Stir well and push the straw on top to the bottom
-Let soak for 18-24hr
Some people like to put something on the straw to weigh it down and keep it submerged for the pasteurization bath, but I think that's unnecessary if you just give it a good stir 2-3 times during the process. For straining this trashcan I use some nylon cord to fasten a big piece of window screening to the top of the trashcan and just knock it over. I've only have the screen pop off once and it still caught all the straw 🤷‍♂️ after the majority of the water has drained, I take the screen with all the straw in it off. Tie the nylon cord to the edges of the screen and hang it from a tree to drip dry for an hour. I like to help it along by squeezing as much water out as I can as well as fluffing out the straw from the clumps that form.

THE POOL
The kiddie pool I like to use is the smallest one they have for sale at ACE Hardware. Also pick up a few rolls of poly while you're there. They're only $7.99 and not too huge. Prepping the pool is actually super easy. Just make 4x 1/4in holes around the bottom edge and 1 more in the very center of the bottom. These are just for drainage.

SPAWN TO BULK
For our spawn to bulk we will be using 3 ingredients:
-Colonized oats/straw/verm mix
-Lime Pasteurized straw(when sprinkling straw make sure to break up the clumps as you add it to the pool)
-Black Kow Composted Manure
Start off by laying a thin layer of straw down covering the floor of the pool just enough that you can't see it anymore. Then open one of your spawn bags and sprinkle 3 handfuls of spawn all over the layer of straw. Next take 2qt of black kow and sprinkle that all over the spawn. After you've lightly covered your layer of spawn with manure, sprinkle another 3 handfuls of spawn over the top of it. After that you want to add another thin layer of straw to top it all off. You should be able to do at least 2 or 3 layered sandwiches like this until you're out of spawn. Make sure you have enough straw put back to make the very top layer straw  as well.

INCUBATION
For colonization of the sub, depending on heat, I like to cover the pool with poly for the first 7 days at least. Use a scalpel/hobby knife to cut slits all over it about every 4in.  If it's above 90f though you may need to take the poly off at night so it doesn't get too stuffy inside. If it gets too hot/stuffy in there, cobweb will start on the straw. If that happens you can just uncover the pool for a day and the cobweb will disappear from all the FAE.  If temps stay cool enough you can just leave the poly on until colonized. That's what I did with the Normel pool, but it got super hot after that and the averys did not like the stuffiness in there. After 7 days you should be seeing big patches of mycelium on the surface and be fully colonized within a couple more days.

CASING
For the casing I've found dry mulched unpasteurized straw to be the key. Because the straw isn't pasteurized or wet to the core, the mycelium cannot eat it as readily. I like to use Standlee Chopped Straw. Theres lots of straw dust and dirt in the bags as well though so I put a few qts in a strainer and shake it clean. Then sprinkle the dry straw over the surface of the pool until its completely covered and you can't see any patches of mycelium anymore. Once your casing is down spray it well with a little garden mister so it soaks up a bit of water and acts as a casing.

FRUITING
For fruiting we will be going open air and spraying the straw casing once daily to keep it damp. In non Tropical/subtropical climates this will most likely not work well as having them uncovered will cause drying. At this point if you've done well, you should see pins popping their heads up through the straw within a few  days!

Spawned 7/6 with 20+qt lime pasteurized straw, 20qt steam pasteurized coir/verm/manure mix and 4x 3lb spawn bags that were a mix of oats/straw/verm. Reached full colonization this morning and I cased with unpasteurized mulched straw. Going to go with my original plan of just leaving them uncovered from this point and keep the straw casing damp.

7/22

7/23

7/23 5.56lb wet harvest

8/8 2nd flush 🤣

8/9 partial 2nd flush harvest 1lb wet 4 mushrooms 🤣

8/10-8/19

8/21 246g monster shroom!

7/30 Avery's Albino!

Also this Avery's pool I used waaay less substrate and spawn and did things a bit different. It was 7 qt jars that were a mix of oats/straw/verm spawned to like 10qt lime pasteurized straw and 10qt black kow straight from the bag. The sub is much thinner than the NorMel pool.

7/31

7/31 Harvest!

8/1 Final dry weight first flush Avery's is at 10oz!

Good luck. Many have tried and few succeeded at this kind of endeavour. Hope your spawn is immaculate.

Everything was very clean and smelling good. Also I used spawn that was on the dry side. The only issue that's come up is the flies/gnats getting in it. Theres some larvae clustered in spots around the edges. I got all that I could see out, but if I can see them they're inside it too.

TBH on a straw based sub I would hope for a smidge bigger myself however, it’s not the size of the fruit that matters it’s the biological efficiency of the harvest that matters.

One of the main things I'm going for with this is something that will produce for months or longer in my coastal Tropical climate with minimal effort. Although next time I will be using a nice isolated clone culture for sure. This could be a lot better, it was just for proof of concept really. I have a 2nd one as well that's Avery's Albino that should be pinning any day now.

Spawning to straw is often a one flush wonder before mold sets in. Not always but often enough. If I wanted to get lots of flushes I would chose a more contamination friendly media like coco coir and vermiculite.

Thanks guys!

@pasty it's not 100% straw, it was about 50/50 lime pasteurized straw and steam pasteurized coir/verm/manure mix. The details are in the original post.

Cool stuff. Personally for a project like this I would use just plain coir/verm, but I applaud your moxie.

What kind are they??  Super pretty.

I bet second flush will have some real monsters. I gotta try a straw sub one of the days, the shrooms always look so good.

Just pulled everything that was ready from the pool. Came in a 5.56lb wet and I left some to finish as well maybe 1/2lb more.
