dehydrating pasta (meat) sauce in an oven
    #26840322 - 07/23/20 10:49 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hi all,

I'm going camping tomorrow for a couple days and made a shit load of spaghetti sauce last night that is just gonna sit in my fridge.

Does anyone know how to dehydrate meat sauce in an oven? This seems like a cool skill to have and a big money saver.

Thank you,

Love!

This guy uses a dehydrator though. I don't have one. I guess I could just experiment in my oven... I wonder what temp to start with.

The lowest possible which is usually 200.  If your oven has a "warm" setting (usually 170-200), I'd start with that.

Well, he said 6hrs at 160 degrees in the video.  So...maybe about 2 hrs in an oven at 200 degrees?

I honestly don't know...You'll just have to keep an eye on it, and tinker with it a bit.  I'd probably rotate whatever you're drying it on about every 15-20 minutes or so...

If you don't have a convection oven, be sure to keep the door open, and point a fan at the opening.

I haven't tried it with anything else, but I've made jerkey that way.

Yes, definitely leave the door open or partially open...I forgot about this.

I do this when drying out large amounts of garden herbs like rosemary & sage (herbs in the oven on warm setting with the door partially open or it'll get too hot)....I've never employed a fan on the job, but it makes sense.

Do you not have a freezer? Much much easier way to preserve a semi liquid like tomato sauce. Ladle it into ziploc bags and freeze the bags if you don't want to freeze the while batch in a big chunk.

He's planning on going camping, and can't be carrying around a big bag of frozen pasta w/ meatsauce.

Ah ok, didn't realize the sauce was coming with on the camping trip. Original post sounded like he just wouldn't have time to eat it and didn't want it to go bad. Freezing would be the better solution for that problem.

Actually, I'm not even sure if he's planning on bringing it camping after reading the post again.  I just assumed he was because dehydrated foods are ideal for backpacking.
