Agar/Petri ?

I found the no pour agar tek that uses Glad mini rounds.
Is it possible to use petri dishes instead? I like being able to what's going on without having to open the container and it appear that petri dishes are better for that.

Anything made of pp5 plastic or glass can be used for no-pour. Most petris are polystyrene and will not hold up in the PC. Check out Alien's Holy Grail Containers.

You can use petri dishes of course, just gotta pour them after sterilization in the traditional method. As in sterile sleeves of petris poured in a flow hood ideally. Or your SAB.
Nothing is as clear as a petri dish. PP containers are really translucent not that clear at all. I bought PP dishes and threw em all away cause they were just not all that.

You can also sterilize glass petris with the agar inside each, just like pasty plates, except you can see.

What is a simple agar tek that can be used to pour into sterile petri dishes?
And when buy petri dishes on Amazon how do you know if they are "really" sterile?

They come in a "sleeve" which is a bag that surrounds a stack of 20. If it is sealed and not damaged they should be sterile.
Not sure on the agar pouring tek to recommend, there are so many on youtube to see. But standard MEA and/or PDA agar recipes are good standard recipes to use.

You are gonna wanna get a borsilicate media bottle too like in this photo. Are you already familiar with sterile Tek working in a still air box?
You essentially break the sleeve down into smaller stacks + pour from the bottom up, lifting the rest of the stack up with each pour. Then afterwards you can wrap your plates or store unwrapped plates in fresh ziplock (fresh ziplocks are sterile) bags until you inoculate them. Wrap plates with parafilm or cut the last 2" off the end of a roll of plastic cling wrap.

borsilicate media bottle - would this https://tinyurl.com/y4xvf9nu work?
I have and use a SAB for inoculations and G2G transfers.
"cut the last 2" off the end of a roll of plastic cling wrap" I love this idea!!

Yea but I just use a common glass bottle that I think had kombucha in it (my wife is a hoarder of bottles) and cover the lid opening with foil. Might not work if you can't cool and open in a flow hood though. I also just used a regular mouth mason jar for many years. The jar isn't super important IMO you can make most anything work.

Yeah you can use whatever. I used a liquor bottle for a long time, then Erlenmeyer flasks with threaded caps (these are nice because you don't have to pour the water so high if you want it to reach agar level.). These media bottles are the best I've used so far though , they're cheap too, I got a 1000ml , 500ml + 100ml off eBay for 10$ free shipping. They are meant for this stuff, they have a nice little plastic piece that keeps the agar from dripping. They're nice.

When the agar recipe calls for potato flake would this work: Idahoan original Mashed Potatoes. Ingredients: IDAHO® POTATOES WITH EMULSIFIER (MONOGLYCERIDES) AND PRESERVATIVE (SODIUM ACID PYROPHOSPHATE, SODIUM BISULFITE, CITRIC ACID, MIXED TOCOPHEROLS).

Are they just plain instant mashed potato flakes?

Not the best choice, the ingredients list should say dehydrated potatoes only.
Also if you use tater flakes it's turns out soooooo much nicer to use a handheld emulsifier/blender stick to whip the hot agar mix when cooking.
