Thermostat automatic cooker for sterilisation?

Has anyone had success sterilising grain spawn with an automatic cooker such as this Klarstein? It is 16l so can comfortably fit 8 quart jars and it has a thermostat with a heat setting of up to 250f. When the temp is set to 250f a LOT of steam escapes but I plan on weighing the lid down as much as I can with a heavy cast iron pan. I understand a pressure cooker is preferrable but this is all I've got. Any anecdotal experience will be appreciated.

With grain you NEED to reach at least 15psi for 90 minutes otherwise you are asking for contams. So unless there is a way to know how much psi you are getting with that just stick to pf tek using brown rice flower and vermiculite cakes.

You could use it. 250f would be ~15 psi steam. How long of a cycle will it allow? If very short might need to run it 3 or 4 times over a few days ... Usually jars are cooked for around 90 minutes at 15psi.
Probably not a good idea to weigh down the vent on thing with a heavy pan. Might somehow make it over pressurize and blow up who knows how this Chinese stuff will react.

The longest cycle is 120 minutes. @250 the steam really does escape like crazy so I'm not sure how effective it will be but I get what you mean about not weighing it down. I guess I will just try it out with the expectation that contam is probable, and if it works then happy days. Do you think 120min will be sufficient or would you run a second cycle?

You can sterilize grain at 0 psi

In theory 120 minutes at 250f is exactly perfect for jars. If the thing is actually pulling that off and not just blowing hot steam up your butt, as it were..
Try it and if it contams try it again but wait 24 hours after and run another cycle and then another 24 hour wait and one more cycle. That should do it.

What sandman is refering to is fractional sterilisation or Tyndallisation. Its energy inefficient, probably hell on your metal lids, and all in all I think it would suck for grain. Feel free to give it a bash, if you get a grow out of it thats better than nothing, and will at least be incentive enough to get a PC.
