Pink Oyster Bag pinning/help UPDATE
#26839257 - 07/22/20 08:43 PM (3 years, 6 months ago) |

Hey guys! So I have transferred my pink oyster spawn to a bag. The mycelium has been growing like crazy, and seemed to grow from the inside out! The mycelium is started to turn pink, and on the top I have lots of little clusters of pins forming.. the block doesn't quite look 100% colonized to me though.. can someone back me up on this maybe? Not sure if I should hold of on cutting the top off yet and putting it in the grow tent.
Thank you!

That does not look fully colonized yet. If you are getting pins and the sub is not fully colonized yet. That is a good indication of contamination in the bag. I think you got something else growing in there it looks too fluffy on top to me. I grow on fuel pellets and I think you have straw there so maybe that is a common trait of growing on straw. I don't know.

Thank you for that input. Just today on the top it started to form like that also.. I do know people mainly use straw for oysters, but I used sawdust and hardwood chips.. that's good to know pinning before full colonization can be an indication of contamination.

This bag was started on 7/14/20 and is almost done...

It is Aloha Elma not pink but yours don't even look close to mine when did you start your bags?

The mushrooms try to pin and drop spores so they can survive. If they don't drop spores they will most likely die from contamination.

If that is sawdust it looks to wet. How did you test to make sure it had the right water content?

I started these bags on the 7th of this month.. I used 1lb of spawn to 4lbs substrate if that says anything. Have you grown oysters or reishi out of curiousity?
I also have this reishi bag I inoculated the same way on the same day.

Yea that is ready to fruit Powfuu. Am I reading that right 1 lb spawn to 4 lbs of sub? I use a 4 oz spoodle scoop to 5 lbs sub.

That is all I grow is oysters. I have never grown reishi. Last year I was doing 40 to 50 bags a week.

You saying the reishi is ready to fruit? I assumed it was, but I keep seeing that they supposedly grow the antlers on the top in the bag before cutting the top of the bag off... but maybe since it is fully colonized it should go into the tent.
But that's awesome you were pushing that many bags of oysters a week! Hopedully I can pinpoint what exactly happened to this bag..

You use a 4 oz scoop of spawn and your 5 lbs bag colonizes in two weeks??? I've always heard bags take like 30 days? I'm new to bags. I get my grain jars to colonize in 2 weeks or less, but 5 lbs bag seems like it would talk longer also. Like I said, totally new at bags though, that's why I'm here for this ad

I did not know that was reishi but I see where you said it is reishi now. I Do not know anything about when to put reishi into fruiting so you should wait and ask someone that has experience with reishi. If it was oysters which I thought it was I would say fruit it.

I use a 4 oz spoodle. I am sure the spawn weighs less than 4 oz. But anyway may bags are done in 2 weeks. Usually sooner but I wait a full two weeks.

I save a lot of time spawning with the spoodle and I get about 40 bags from a 7 lb bag of spawn.

One thing I should note is I have strong spawn. I have Amycel 3015 and Aloha Medicinals Elma. Those are the two I mainly grow. Strong spawn will make a world of difference in colonization times.

Okay that is good to know about your spawn as well.. before I saw that I was going to ask what specific incubation conditions you do but I believe I'm doing it correct. I came from growing actives, so everyday I learn more about bags and that.
That 4 oz spoodle looks awesome and well worth it. I am definitely considering getting it, will make loading bags so much easier as well for now

I take the spoodle and place it in an empty spawn bag and PC at 15 psi for 20 minutes. This will make sure it is clean.
Here is another tip. It looks like you are using an impulse sealer. They take to long. Try using reclosable cable ties. When you go to fruit you release the tie let out all the air and reseal. Then flip the bag over and cut the bottom of the bag from corner to corner trying not to lift the bag. If you lift the bag you will get fruits inside the bag that will not grow properly. That method is for oysters...
https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Releasable-cable-50LBS-100pcs/dp/B004C4ZRIK/ref=sr_1_4?crid=5VKYRKC08L57&dchild=1&keywords=monoprice+cable+ties&qid=1595481966&s=industrial&sprefix=monoprice+cable+ti%2Cindustrial%2C165&sr=1-4
The cable ties can be put in the PC without a problem.

That's awesome, I haven't heard a whole bunch on using the ties, I'll definitely look into this! I do have one more question while were here on oysters, I've seen people cut small holes or slits in bags for oysters, do you recommend just cutting the top of the bag off then like you mentioned?

And what kind of fuel pellets and that do you use for oyster substrate bags if I can ask?

No, don't cut the top off the bag. When I fruit I cut the bottom of the bag you know the side opposite the open end of the bag. I then place the open side of the bag on the shelving. The reason I cut the bottom of the bag is because it sits on the bottom of the bag for two weeks to colonize. So the bottom of the bag is tight against the sub. So if you don't lift the bag when you slice it that tiny thin slice is the only place it will fruit from and you will get fewer fruits under the bag that will not mature properly.

I use Premium hardwood fuel pellets. As long as they are hardwood and no softwood they are fine. I supplement with soyhulls 50/50 by weight. I bought a flow meter for like $35 that puts the same amount of water in my bags every time then I mix only once when I spawn. I do not mix the HWFP and the soyhulls until I spawn. It saves time not mixing twice.
