Would you harvest some of these tonight? * 1
    #26839353 - 07/22/20 09:33 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

So they don’t seem completely ready to me, some of them are very close IMO but it’s either I do it tonight or wait until tomorrow night but by then I could see spores dropping. Thoughts?

The caps seem a little too round and the veil doesn’t seem ready yet. I mean I could wait like two hours, they’ll mature some.

A lot of them are fine to harvest right now. I prefer harvesting when caps are still closed, personally.

For sure. I’ve normally waited for them to flatten out a little bit at least but like I said I didn’t want to wait till tomorrow.

If you don't want to wait for the veil to break, then a good way to tell when to harvest is the color of the caps. They will turn a lighter brown when they are about to open and you can pick them then. If you wait till tomorrow some of them will most likely sporulate. Pick all the ones with a broken veil, and all the ones that are the lighter brown color. Eventually you'll get a feeling for what they look like when they are about to open.

A good example of a mature fruit is the one in the bottom left corner of your first picture. And if you compare cap colors, you'll notice a few more that can be picked.

There isn't really anything wrong with letting them sporulate. But personally I hate the look of spores on the tops of my beautiful golden caps. Especially when dried.

Interesting I see what you mean, thanks for that. It’s awful timing and I don’t want to wait. My last set of shoeboxes matured at a pretty even rate, I was reading something a trusted cultivator said, he said that (at least sometimes) when he doesn’t harvest them all at the same time the ones that didn’t get harvested sometimes stall. Thoughts?

Personally, I have never seen problems from partial harvesting, and I don't really see why it would cause any problems. I think best practice is to just harvest as they mature. But if you want to you can harvest all of them, immature fruits tend to be more potent by weight in my experience.

Right on. I ended up just harvesting a couple of the more mature ones. My other shoeboxes that are going have better field capacity, and the jars weren’t in a stupid hot closet so I’m hoping there will be a more even pin set. Thanks man I appreciate it!

At the end of the day I think it mostly comes down to the genetics. Are you inoculating with spores? Usually with spores you'll end up with uneven pinning to some degree no matter what you do because the mycelium is just a group of strains working together, some of those strains are poor fruiters and some are prolific. If you can work with agar and clone a fruit from a dense cluster you would most likely have much more even fruiting, and they would mature at the same time.

All my shoeboxes are agar now. The boxes got dry too. I was sick and neglected everything so I’m actually happy they turned out this well. I probably need to do some more specific agar transfers from fruit that did well, maby. I’ve been just trying to keep a steady flow of myc growing on agar, and transferring to WBS jars then to the shoeboxes.

One thing I’ve never done is cloning fruit. Idk why I haven’t done that yet. It’s a pretty good way to get good harvests huh?

I haven't done any cloning either, but from what I've heard its the most surefire way to get a good set of genetics. You can clone the best fruit in a good cluster, and when you fruit that culture theoretically it will have more clusters. And usually a clone culture is going to be a strong colonizer/fruiter overall because it was already successful.

I'd give them more time, say 6-12 hours.

I usually harvest about when my tubs look like the ones in your picture unless I'm trying to do prints.
